Chief of War (2025 – )

Chief of War is a 2025 American historical drama television series created by Jason Momoa and Thomas Pa'a Sibbett. The film premiered on the Apple TV+ streaming platform on August 1, 2025.

The film is a historical drama that presents the epic story of the unification of the Hawaiian Islands in the late 18th century, told from the perspective of the native population.

The main character, Ka'iana, is a Hawaiian warrior and nobleman who, after a journey abroad, returns to join the bloody campaign to unify the islands. He initially supports the unification effort, but over time he begins to question the methods and goals of the movement. Ka'iana faces difficult choices between his duty to his people, his personal honor, and the growing threat of Western colonization.

The series explores themes of identity, betrayal, cultural resilience, and the clash between tradition and outside influence. The story is set against the backdrop of real historical events, such as the unification of the Hawaiian Islands under the rule of Kamehameha I.

The series features a predominantly Polynesian cast and was filmed with attention to cultural authenticity, including the use of the Hawaiian language and traditional practices. The project was supported by numerous cultural consultants and organizations to ensure the accuracy of the events and customs depicted.

The first two episodes will be directed by Justin Chon, with the final episode to be directed by Momoa himself. The series will consist of nine episodes, airing weekly until September 19, 2025.
