American Hostage (2026 – )

Rights holder / Distributor: Sony Pictures Television / MGM+

American Hostage is a 2026 American psychological thriller film created by Sean Ryan and Eileen Meyers. It premiered in the United States on September 20, 2026 on MGM+.

Set in 1970s Indianapolis, the story follows radio journalist Fred Hackman, who finds himself at the center of a hostage crisis. Car dealer Tony Kiritsis takes his mortgage broker Dick Hall hostage and demands to be interviewed live on Fred's popular radio show. The journalist must decide whether to comply with the request, while the hostage's life is in danger, and every word spoken in public could change the course of events. The case gradually becomes a personal crisis for Fred, who must balance his professional duty with his own beliefs.

Directors Adam Arkin and Nina Lopez-Corrado build tension around the clash between the media, the public interest, and human life. The story uses a real-life case to show how a radio interview can become a dangerous ordeal for both the hostage and the journalist. Rather than relying solely on action, the series emphasizes psychological pressure and moral decisions. The eight-episode format allows the participants’ motivations and the consequences of their actions to gradually be revealed.

Jon Hamm is Fred Heckman – a journalist forced to take responsibility for events that are quickly spiraling out of his control. Giovanni Ribisi builds the character of Tony Kiritsis, whose desperate act puts all participants in an extremely dangerous situation. Christopher Polaha plays Dick Hall, the hostage whose life depends on the negotiations, and Miriel Enos is Barbara Heckman, the journalist's wife. William Jackson Harper, Jonathan Tucker and Kat Cunning complement the cast with characters who expand the story beyond the hostage crisis itself.

American Hostage combines a crime thriller with a psychological drama about the power of the media and the responsibility for human life. The strength of the story lies in the tension between the kidnapper's desire to be heard and the journalist's duty not to turn the tragedy into a mere spectacle. The real-life basis gives additional weight to the events, and the cast helps to keep the conflict personal and human. The series is suitable for viewers who prefer suspenseful stories based on real cases to traditional criminal investigations.
