Top movies in theaters and platforms in December 2025
December is usually a month when cinemas come alive — and this year is no exception. A number of premiere titles will offer a variety of genres, from family adventures and animations to thrillers, horror and musical dramas.
Here's a curated selection + my take on what's worth it — and for whom:

Jay Kelly
December 5 (Netflix)
Jay Kelly (played by George Clooney) is an established Hollywood star who impulsively decides to go on a road trip through Europe. This ill-advised getaway quickly turns into a deeply personal experience. As he confronts old memories, unspoken disappointments, and more cheesecake than is reasonable, Jay gradually realizes that the glamour of fame has overshadowed his true roles as a close friend and father. A light, perhaps more thoughtful story — a chance for a more relaxed cinematic experience, away from blockbusters, perfect for the start of the month.
„"Nightmare at Freddy's 2" (Five Nights at Freddy's 2)
December 5
A year after the events of "Freddy the Bear," the terrifying story has become an urban legend, so popular it's even inspired a local festival. Meanwhile, police officer Vanessa and Mike, the former night watchman, continue to desperately keep 11-year-old Abby from knowing the truth about the fate of her beloved animated friends.
But when Abby sneaks out to see them one more time, she unwittingly awakens a new round of nightmares. It is this forbidden meeting with Freddy, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy that unlocks grim revelations about "Freddy's" dark and sinister origins.
Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery
December 12 (Netflix)
For lovers of mysteries and riddles, the new adventure with detective Benoit Blanc (actor: Daniel Craig) promises a complex plot, surprises and an intelligent crime thriller. If you like the series "Knives Out", this is a must-see.
Avatar: Fire and Ashes (Avatar: Fire and Ash)
December 19
The most anticipated title of the month: the third part of James Cameron's space saga promises once again scale, spectacle and the return of Pandora. For fans of visual epics and adventures - an absolute premiere that has the potential to dominate the box office.
The maid (The Housemaid)
December 19
A psychological thriller with a dark atmosphere — suitable for viewers who prefer spectacular but serious cinema with tension, secrets, and dramatic twists.
SpongeBob SquarePants Wanted (The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants)
December 26
For family audiences and fans of animation and humor: a new underwater adventure with Superwoman and friends looking for new sea challenges. Comedy, color and fun — a good variety among the heavier titles.
Song Sung Blue
December 26
For those looking for something more emotional and musical: a combination of drama, music and human history. Suitable for watching in company, with a good mood and an open heart.
Why December 2025 could be strong for cinema?
- The combination of big blockbusters (action, fantasy) + family and animated films + dramas and thrillers ensures that everyone will find something to their taste.
- The movies are strategically placed — from the beginning of the month to its very end — so there's time to catch up before it gets really cold.
- For Bulgaria - with these films in cinemas, you can get a good mix of entertainment, family programming, and festival atmosphere.
