Jennifer Lawrence and The Hunger Games return to theaters ahead of new film release
Over the past 15 years Jennifer Lawrence has established herself as one of the most successful and sought-after actresses in Hollywood. Almost every production with her participation becomes either a serious box office hit or a contender for prestigious film awards. At only 20 years old, she received an award nomination „"Oscar"“ for his role in „"Winter's Bone"“, becoming the second youngest actress nominated in the Best Actress category.
However, the biggest breakthrough in her career undoubtedly came with the role of Katniss Everdeen in the series „"The Hunger Games"“. At the end of the first decade of the 21st century, the novels of Susan Collins became a worldwide phenomenon, leading to their film adaptation. Lawrence's performance further contributed to the story's popularity, and the first film achieved the impressive $695.2 million worldwide box office revenue. Subsequently, the five films in the saga grossed a total of over $3.3 billion around the world.
This fall, the franchise will continue with its sixth installment – „The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1“, which is scheduled to premiere in theaters. On the eve of the new film, the studio Lionsgate announced that in September, all five films in the series will return to the big screen.
It is not yet clear how the screenings will be organized. It is not clear whether each week will be dedicated to a different film, or whether there will be special events with a limited number of screenings.
Although the sci-fi series has enjoyed immense popularity over the years, interest in it has gradually begun to wane. As often happens with successful franchises, after the main story ended, studios have looked for new ways to expand the universe.
This opportunity arose thanks to the novel „The Hunger Games: A Song of Ice and Fire“ by Suzanne Collins, whose action unfolds 64 years before the events of the original saga. The film adaptation told the backstories of some of the well-known characters and received relatively good reviews from critics, but the financial results fell short of expectations. The film won $348.9 million at the global box office – a little more than half the revenue of the previous film in the main series.
While this result cannot be called a complete failure, especially considering that cinemas were still recovering from the difficult period in 2023, it was a far cry from the successes of previous films.
The upcoming „"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2"“, which is also based on a novel by Suzanne Collins, could prove crucial to the future of the franchise. The new film has the potential to either return the series to the top of the most successful film sagas or definitively show that the story of „"The Hunger Games"“ has reached its natural end.
