Rights holder / Distributor: Columbia Pictures / Sony Pictures Releasing

The Zohan: A Stylist from the Reserve (You Don't Mess with the Zohan) is a 2008 action comedy film directed by Dennis Dugan written by Adam Sandler, Robert Smigel and Judd Apatow. The world premiere is on June 6, 2008 in the United States. The film combines absurd humor, a parody of spy stories and a satirical look at the enmity between Israelis and Palestinians, focusing on an unusual character who decides to abandon his military career for a very different dream.

Zohan Dvir is a famous Israeli commando whose fighting skills make him a nightmare for his opponents. Despite his successes, however, he is tired of the constant fighting and dreams of starting a new life as a hairdresser in New York. To carry out his plan, he fakes his own death and goes to America, where he tries to leave the past behind. He soon finds work in a small salon and discovers that his talent for attracting clients may be just as impressive as his abilities on the battlefield. However, the new beginning does not go smoothly, as his old enemies gradually learn where he is, and Zohan must decide whether he can really escape his former life.

Director Dennis Dugan builds a comedy that relies on exaggerated situations, physical humor and deliberately absurd moments. The contrast between the ruthless commando and the careful stylist is the main source of comic situations, and the transition from combat missions to everyday life in the neighborhood salon allows the film to ridicule ideas about masculinity, fame and personal success. The plot uses political opposition as a backdrop for a series of misunderstandings, although the satirical approach is not always sufficiently measured and at times relies on crude stereotypes. Nevertheless, the production maintains an energetic pace and offers enough diverse comedic situations to not be limited to a parody of the action genre.

Adam Sandler is at the center of the story as the Zohan and builds an image of a man who combines superhuman fighting abilities with a genuine enthusiasm for hairdressing. John Turturro plays the Phantom – his long-time adversary, whose presence maintains the tension and brings the hero back to his past. Emmanuel Crichey takes on the role of Dalia, the salon owner, who gradually becomes close to the Zohan and helps him adjust to his new life. Rob Schneider is Salim, a Palestinian taxi driver whose relationship with the Zohan is filled with comical conflicts. Nick Swordson completes the company as Michael, one of the protagonist's colleagues at the salon.

The Zohan: A Stylist from the Reserve is an unconventional comedy that contrasts military glory with the desire for a peaceful and pleasurable life. The film relies on Adam Sandler's characteristic humor, exaggerated characters and a series of ridiculous situations that are unlikely to appeal to every viewer. Despite its uneven satire and overly bold jokes, the production offers enough funny moments and a memorable main character. This is a choice for comedy fans who prefer provocative humor and are not looking for a realistic look at the topics touched upon in the story.
