„Without Blood“" (literal translation: Without blood) is an American-Italian war drama film written and directed by Angelina Jolie, based on the novel of the same name by Alessandro Barrico. The film has its world premiere on September 8, 2024. in the program of the Toronto International Film Festival, and its Italian cinema premiere is on April 10, 2025. Its American theatrical release is scheduled for September 18, 2026.
The story begins after the end of an unnamed armed conflict, when a little girl named Nina witnesses the brutal murder of her family. Years later, she meets Tito, one of the men involved in the tragic events. The meeting between the two gradually transforms the film from a war drama into a dark conversation about memory, guilt, forgiveness and the desire for revenge. The story is not so much interested in the military conflict itself, as in the consequences that violence leaves on people long after the guns have fallen silent.
Salma Hayek builds a strong and restrained image of Nina, a woman carrying the trauma of the past for decades. Demian Bichir performs convincingly as Tito, a character who gradually reveals his own version of events and questions the notions of victim and perpetrator. The cast also includes Juan Minichin, Louis Alberti, Mario Zaragoza, Andres Delgado, Nika Perone, Jorge Antonio Guerrero and Jose Pesquina.
The direction of Angelina Jolie is unusually calm for a film that begins with brutal violence. Rather than relying on large-scale fight scenes, the production uses silence, conversations, and the gradual revelation of the past.
