Werewolves (2024)

Werewolves (literal translation: Werewolves) is a 2024 American fantasy horror action film directed by Stephen Miller from a screenplay by Matthew Kennedy. The film is set to be released in the United States on December 6, 2024.

The film combines a classic werewolf theme with modern elements of fear, science fiction, and the struggle for survival in an apocalyptic scenario. The film shows what happens when humanity is unprepared for a natural anomaly that activates an ancient gene, turning people into monsters.

The story takes place one year after a supermoon-induced event in which people exposed to the moonlight turn into werewolves and wreak havoc. Now, as a supermoon approaches again, humanity prepares: homes are fortified, scientists work on a serum to block genetic transformation, and families protect themselves in homes filled with weapons and defense systems.

The main character, Wesley Marshall (Frank Grillo), a former Marine and molecular biologist, lives with his stepsister Lucy and her daughter Amy. When the lab they work in begins testing a new defense – „Moonscreen“ – things go awry. Transformations begin, chaos erupts and a fight for survival begins as the race against time (and against the rising sun) becomes ever more intense.

Miller uses the contrast between dark, shadowy shots and bright (and dangerous) moonlight to emphasize the risk of transformation. The effects on the „werewolves“ are a mix of practical and digital techniques—and while they’re not always perfect, they at least attempt to recapture the feel of classic horror. The camera pans from tense action scenes to calm moments of vulnerability, especially between Wesley, Lucy, and Amy, creating psychological tension.

„Werewolves“" is a film for fans of the action-horror genre, offering a healthy dose of transformations, monsters, and tense moments. It's not a masterpiece, but it's effective when you want to watch something with primitive horror, physical confrontations, and a little family drama as a supplement.
