To escape their busy lives, the Wilson family takes a vacation to Santa Cruz, California, where they plan to spend time with the friendly Tyler family. One day at the beach, their young son Jason almost gets lost, causing mother Adelaide to become more vigilant about her family.
The night after that day, four mysterious figures invade Adelaide's home, where she grew up and where they are staying. The family is shocked to discover that the invaders look and speak exactly like them, but have a terrifying appearance. Adelaide knows who these "monsters" are, and soon the family begins a chase with their fearsome doppelgangers.
