Upgrade (2018)

Upgrade is a 2018 American fantasy action thriller film directed by Leigh Whannell from a screenplay by Leigh Whannell. The film premiered in the United States on June 1, 2018.

The film is one of those unexpected sci-fi thrillers that doesn't just surprise, but literally hits the viewer with its originality, brutality, and philosophical weight. It's a film that combines a cyberpunk atmosphere with a classic revenge story, delivered with creativity, technical precision, and dark charm.

Set in a near future where technology has permeated almost every aspect of human life, Gray Trace is an auto mechanic with a nostalgic attitude towards old technology and the analog world. After a tragic attack that kills his wife and leaves him paralyzed from the neck down, Gray receives an offer to participate in an experiment: to have an artificial intelligence called STEM implanted in his body.

From there, a deeply compelling journey begins—physical and psychological. With the help of STEM, Grey not only regains his mobility, but also gains superhuman abilities. An investigation begins that soon turns into a bloody odyssey on the road to revenge. But things get complicated when the line between Grey and artificial intelligence begins to blur...

Leigh Whannell (screenwriter of Saw and Insidious) proves here that he is a talented director with a keen eye for style and atmosphere. Despite the modest budget, Upgrade looks visually impressive. The scenes of violence are shot with extremely inventive cinematography solutions - especially during the fight scenes, when the camera moves in sync with Grey's movements and creates a sense of controlled madness.

The world built in the film is cold, neon, industrial – reminiscent of classic cyberpunk like Blade Runner, but with a more grounded and physically intense approach. Technology here is not a fetish, but a threat. Whannell makes no compromises – the film is brutal, bloody, tense and constantly on the edge.

Upgrade is one of the hidden gems of modern science fiction cinema. It is a skillful mix of action, thriller, horror and philosophical fiction. Without trying to be too intellectual or too commercial, the film manages to balance depth and spectacle. Although on a limited budget, it surpasses many expensive productions in its idea, execution and style.

If you like futuristic stories with a dark twist, philosophical questions, and a strong dose of adrenaline – Upgrade is a must-see film.
