Two Prosecutors

Two prosecutors (Two Prosecutors) is a 2025 French-German-Latvian-Romanian-Lithuanian-Ukrainian biographical crime thriller film directed by Sergey Loznitsa from a screenplay by Georgi Demidov and Sergey Loznitsa. The film premiered in France on 5 November 2025.

„Two prosecutors“" is a historical drama directed by Sergei Loznitsa, known for his strict, documentary style and uncompromising view of totalitarian regimes. The film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Georgi Demidov and is a powerful moral and political study of the Stalin era.

The action takes place in 1937 – one of the darkest periods of the Great Terror in the Soviet Union. The main character is a young and ambitious prosecutor who comes across a letter from a prisoner claiming to be the victim of unjust accusation and cruel repression. Intrigued by the case, he decides to investigate the matter, even though it means confronting the system itself. His path takes him into a labyrinth of bureaucracy, fear and silent complicity, where the truth is not only difficult to find, but also dangerous.

As the story progresses, the hero begins to realize that this is not an isolated incident, but a mechanism of repression that operates at all levels. He is faced with a choice – to remain part of the system or to try to oppose it, with all the consequences that this entails. The film does not rely on dramatic twists, but on a gradual build-up of tension and a sense of impasse.

Sergey Loznitsa's style is extremely restrained and precise. The camera is often static, the scenes are long, and the dialogue is carefully measured. This creates an almost documentary sense of reality and immerses the viewer in the atmosphere of fear and control. The direction avoids any sensationalism and lets the weight come from the situations and moral dilemmas themselves. The visual world is cold and oppressive, which emphasizes the themes of the film.

Alexander Kuznetsov builds an image of a young man torn between idealism and the reality of the system.
Alexander Filipenko It lends weight and authority to its role related to institutional power.
Anatoly Bely complements the tension with a more introverted and psychologically intense presence.
Valentin Novopolsky and Vytoutas Kaniusonis expand the picture of the system through their supporting roles.
The acting is restrained and realistic, completely in sync with the director's approach.

„Two prosecutors“" is a heavy but extremely moving film that examines themes such as morality, truth and personal responsibility in the conditions of a totalitarian regime. This is not an easy movie to watch, but it is important and deeply meaningful. The film will appeal mainly to viewers who appreciate historical and authorial dramas with a clearly expressed position.
