The Virgin of the Quarry Lake (orig. title: The Virgin of the Tosquera) is a 2025 Argentine-Spanish-Mexican horror thriller film directed by Laura Casabe from a screenplay by Mariana Enríquez and Benjamin Naishtat. The film premiered in Argentina on January 15, 2025.
The movie The Virgin of the Quarry Lake offers a dark and atmospheric look at adolescence, obsession, and the thin line between reality and superstition. Combining folkloric motifs with modern themes of social pressure and identity, the production builds a tense and unusual story that gradually unfolds into something much more sinister.
The story takes place during a hot summer in a small Argentine town, where a group of teenage girls spend their time by an abandoned quarry that has been turned into a lake. At the center of the plot is Natalia, a young and insecure girl who is obsessed with the idea of being liked and accepted by the more popular girls. When a charismatic new boy appears, the tension between them begins to grow. In an attempt to gain attention and love, Natalia turns to dark rituals and local superstitions associated with a mysterious figure known as the „virgin“ of the lake. Gradually, the game with the unknown gets out of control, and the consequences begin to affect everyone around her.
Laura Kasabe constructs a highly atmospheric film in which the tension builds slowly but surely. She uses the natural environment – the heat, the water and the isolated location – to create a sense of claustrophobia and inevitability. The direction relies more on suggestion than direct horror, leaving many of the scariest moments to occur off-screen or in the viewer’s mind.
Dolores Oliverio – Natalia, the main character, whose inner insecurity and emotional instability drive the story.
Lola Abramovsky – Trina, a confident and dominant figure in the group who has a strong influence on the others.
Agustin Sosa – Diego, the new young man, around whom tension and rivalry are arising.
Maria Soledad Rodriguez – a maternal figure who adds realism and social context to the story.
The acting performances are natural and convincing, especially in portraying teenage insecurities, jealousy, and emotional extremes.
The Virgin of the Quarry Lake is a slow but powerful horror film that focuses more on psychology than on traditional genre elements. The film explores themes of identity, belonging, and the destructive power of the desire to be accepted. This makes it not just a scary story, but a deeply human and disturbing parable. With its atmosphere and strong emotional charge, the film stands out as one of the more interesting titles in contemporary art horror.
