The Remarkable Life of Ibelin (2024)

The Remarkable Life of Ibelin is a 2024 Norwegian documentary film directed by Benjamin Ree from a screenplay by Mats Steen. The film premiered in Norway on 19 January 2024.

This is a film about the life of Mats Steen, a young Norwegian with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, whose physical world is shrinking, but the virtual one through World of Warcraft blooms.

The film begins with intimate home archives and interviews with Mats' parents and sister, tracing his struggle against the progressive weakness of his body. After his death, the family published his obituary and receives hundreds of messages from gamers around the world — friends of Ibelin, his WoW avatar, who share how much he meant to them. Then the film dives into the authentic chat logs (about 42,000 pages!), and Ibelin's story comes to life like an animated WoW machinima, with captivating lines and situations — conversations, first love, support.

The animation is stunning – using original models from the game, thanks to an authentic style from the global machinima community created by Rasmus Tukia and team. The result is a vibrant, colorful, emotionally charged virtual world.

The very combination of dark, retro home recordings and bright WoW visuals introduces the viewer to Mats' two parallel lives.

The Remarkable Life of Ibelin is both a documentary memorial and an animated world that highlights how meaningful a digital entity can be. It is proof that even when bodies are limited, the heart and spirit can find wholeness through community and content—virtual yet authentically real. The film reminds the viewer how human it is to connect, share, and love—even through a screen.
