The Occupant (2025)
The Occupant is a 2025 Dutch drama fantasy thriller film directed by Hugo Keizer from a screenplay by Philip Michael Howie, Hugo Keizer and Roelof Jan Minebu. The film premiered in the Netherlands on 6 November 2025.
„The Occupant“" is a psychological fantasy thriller with elements of family drama and survival. The film follows the extremely difficult journey of a woman who fights for her sister's life after a helicopter crash in a remote, harsh mountain environment. With a visual focus on nature, full of dangers, and the psychological isolation of the heroine, the film combines science fiction ideas with human emotions, making it an unconventional experience for the viewer.
After learning that her sister is seriously ill and in need of medical treatment, geologist Abby Brennan agrees to take on a dangerous assignment that involves working in a remote mountainous area to raise the necessary funds. During the trip, things take a turn for the worse when her helicopter crashes, leaving her alone and injured in an extremely hostile environment.
While trying to survive amidst the icy wasteland, lack of food, and physical threats, Abby discovers a radio and comes into contact with a stranger who introduces himself as John Fisher. He guides her through the radio, but keeps the viewer in doubt as to whether everything that is happening is real or a product of her exhaustion and fear.
The film makes it difficult to distinguish between reality and fantasy, which adds mystery to survival and further complicates Abby's heroic struggle to return to her sister.
Director Hugo Keiser builds the visual world of "„The Occupant“" as a lush and harsh landscape, in which nature becomes almost a character in its own right. The camera often captures wide, isolating shots of inaccessible peaks and icy terrain, creating a sense of helplessness in the face of circumstances. The atmosphere shifts from hope to despair, as the film skillfully uses natural conditions to emphasize not only Abby's physical struggle, but also her inner psychological transformation. The directing style is both intimate and epic - the viewer feels both the pull of loneliness and the majesty of nature that the effort to survive requires.
The performances in "„The Occupant“" emphasize intense emotions and physical challenges:
Ella Balinska – as Abby Brennan, highly convincing as someone facing physical and emotional trials, managing her desperation to survive.
Rob Delaney – like John Fisher, whose voice over the radio carries mystery and hope, but leaves the viewer wondering whether it is real help or not.
Vanessa Ifediora – as Beth Brennan, Abby's sister, whose condition is the reason for the main character's desperate actions.
Stuart Graham – like Archie Brennan, who adds emotional context to the family dynamics.
George Lasha – in the role of Tamaz, a key secondary character.
Konstantin Roinishvili – like Sergi, who introduces a foreign element and complicates the plot threads.
Armin Karima – like Hardy, completes the group of heroes in the extreme environment.
Sheena Kelly – like the nurse who emphasizes the consequences of survival.
The actors create intimate, human portraits that help the viewer immerse themselves in the characters' hardships and hopes.
„The Occupant“" is a tense and visually memorable survival sci-fi thriller that combines an emotional plot of family love and psychological mysteries. Despite some structural criticism from critics, the acting — especially that of Ella Balinska — and the stark visual environment make the film an interesting and challenging experience for the viewer.
