„The Love Hypothesis“" is an American romantic comedy film based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Ali Hazelwood. The film is directed by Claire Scanlon, and the script was written by Sarah Rothschild. The premiere is scheduled for September 23, 2026. exclusively on the Amazon Prime Video movie platform. Starring: Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman, who take on the role of two scientists whose apparent relationship gradually begins to seem more real than they planned.
The story follows Olive Smith, a talented PhD student who is completely absorbed in her scientific career. When she discovers that her best friend Anne is interested in Jeremy, a man for whom Olive herself has feelings, she impulsively kisses him to convince him that she has moved on. The problem is that the man turns out to be Dr. Adam Carlsen, a famous, strict, and seemingly completely unapproachable professor. After what happened, the two agree to maintain a fictitious relationship that should be comfortable for both of them. Gradually, however, the line between pretense and real feelings begins to blur.
Lili Reinhart is at the center of the story as Olive – an intelligent and ambitious young woman trying to balance her personal life with the pressures of academia. Tom Bateman plays Dr. Adam Carlsen, a professor with a fearsome reputation who gradually reveals his more human side. The chemistry between the two is key to the success of the romantic line, as it is the contrast between their personalities that turns the fictional relationship into a source of comic and romantic situations.
The supporting cast includes: Rachel Marsh as Anne, Olive's best friend, Nicholas Duvernay like Jeremy and Jabuki Young-White as Malcolm. Other actors include Artie Frusciante, Jinan Goosen, Kenny Wong, Alexandra Petrachuk and Emily Le. The characters surrounding Olive and Adam contribute to the comedic side of the story and create a fuller look at the academic world in which the action takes place.
The direction of Claire Scanlon follows the tradition of the modern romantic comedy, placing the main emphasis on the relationships between the main characters. The scientific environment is used not only as a backdrop, but also as a kind of counterpoint to the romantic story - Olive and Adam are people used to analyzing facts and looking for evidence, but find themselves in a situation where feelings cannot be subjected to the same control.
One of the most interesting aspects of the film is the very idea of the „fake relationship.“ This well-known romantic trope is here set in an academic setting, allowing the script to juxtapose rational thinking with the unpredictability of love. The story gradually turns the pre-arranged rules between Olive and Adam into a problem as the two begin to experience feelings that were not part of their original plan.
The film also has a curious connection to the origin of the novel. The book by Ali Hazelwood originally started as fanfiction inspired by the relationship between Rey and Kylo Ren from "„Star Wars“", before the author reworked the story into a standalone contemporary novel. In the final version, the main characters are given their own history and identity, but this unusual backstory remains a curious part of the work's path to the big screen.
„The Love Hypothesis“" is a classic romantic comedy with a modern academic setting and a familiar but effective idea of a relationship that started as a pretense. The combination of Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman, the comedic situations and the gradual development of the romantic line make the film a suitable proposition for fans of lighter love stories. The production does not seek to reinvent the genre, but to offer a pleasant and funny story about two people who discover that love does not always follow the logic of a scientific hypothesis.
