The Long Walk

Rights holder / Distributor: Lionsgate

The long walk (The Long Walk) is an American dystopian thriller film with elements of horror and drama, directed by Francis Lawrence according to the scenario of JT Molnar, based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King, published under the pseudonym Richard Backman. The film premiered on September 12, 2025. in the U.S. The production is the first film adaptation of the novel, long considered one of King's most difficult works to adapt, and offers a dark story of survival, human will, and the price of submission in an oppressive future.

The story takes place in a dystopian version of the United States, ruled by an authoritarian regime that organizes an annual race known as "The Long Walk." Fifty young participants must walk continuously at a set speed, with any slowdown having deadly consequences. The sole survivor receives a life-changing prize, but the path to victory passes through physical exhaustion, psychological pressure and moral trials. At the center of the story are Ray Garraty and his companions, who gradually understand that the most difficult battle is not only against the rules of the race, but against the loss of humanity.

In the lead role Cooper Hoffman builds a strong image of Ray Garraty – a young participant trying to maintain his hope and compassion in a cruel environment. David Johnson impresses as McVries, making the relationship between the two characters the emotional core of the film. Among the other actors, the following stand out: Gareth Wareing, Tut Nuot, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, Roman Griffin Davis, Jordan Gonzalez, Joshua Ojik, Josh Hamilton, Judy Greer and Mark Hamill.

The direction of Francis Lawrence relies on tension, atmosphere, and the gradual build-up of psychological pressure rather than a traditional action approach. After his work on the series "„The Hunger Games“"The director once again creates a world in which survival is not only about physical strength, but also about moral choices. The film's visual style uses harsh landscapes, minimalist environments, and a sense of constant threat, which emphasizes the characters' hopelessness.

One of the strongest sides of "„The long walk“" is the way it transforms a simple concept – a group of people who must keep going – into a tense psychological drama. The film explores themes such as control over society, the transformation of suffering into a spectacle, and the limits of human endurance. Critics and viewers have particularly noted the strong performances of the actors and the emotional impact of the story.

„The long walk“" is a dark and moving adaptation of one of Stephen King's most interesting novels. Thanks to the direction of Francis Lawrence, a strong cast, and topical themes, the film manages to be more than just a survival story, but a parable about society, power, and human resilience. It's one of the most serious adaptations of a King work in recent years, and a title that offers much more than a standard thriller.

Filming began on July 24, 2024, in Winnipeg, Canada, and concluded on September 12, 2024. The film is produced by Lionsgate and Vertigo Entertainment. The music was composed by Jeremiah Frates of The Lumineers.
