Check (2022)

The Inspection

„Check“ (The Inspection) is an American biographical drama film inspired by the personal story of director Elegance Bratton, who not only directed the film but also wrote the screenplay. The production was produced by A24 and made its world premiere on September 8, 2022 at the Toronto International Film Festival, and was released in theaters in the United States on November 18 of the same year. The film quickly attracted critical attention for its sincerity and autobiographical nature, becoming one of the most talked-about independent drama titles of the year.

The story follows young Ellis French, a black man who, after years of being rejected by his own mother because of his sexual orientation, decides to join the United States Marine Corps. In the harsh environment of military training, he is forced to fight not only with physical trials, but also with prejudice, discrimination and his own inner fears. Gradually, Ellis begins to discover a strength, self-confidence and a sense of belonging that he has never felt before. Without relying on unnecessary dramatization, the film tells a deeply human story of acceptance, dignity and the search for one's place in the world.

In the lead role Jeremy Pope gives an extremely strong and emotional performance, which earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination. Next to him Gabrielle Union impresses in an unusual dramatic role for her as Ellis's mother - a woman torn between her religious beliefs and maternal love. Raul Castillo, Bokeem Woodbine, McCall Lombardi, Aaron Dominguez, Nicholas Logan, Eman Esfandi and Aubrey Joseph They build a convincing ensemble that recreates the complex relationships in the harsh atmosphere of the military camp.

The greatest virtue of "„Check“"is his sincerity. Elegance Bratton does not turn its story into a patriotic war film or a simple social drama, but tells the story of the painful path to self-acceptance. The direction is restrained and realistic, without unnecessary sentimentality, and the script skillfully interweaves the themes of family, identity, masculinity and the need for each person to be accepted as they are. It is the director's personal experience that gives the film its genuine emotional power.

Upon its release, the film received rave reviews from critics, who praised Jeremy Pope's performance, the screenplay, and Elegance Bratton's feature directorial debut. While it was not a box office hit, the film won a number of awards from independent film organizations and solidified A24's reputation as a studio that supports bold and personal stories. Today, "„Check“" is being seen as one of the most impactful American dramas of 2022 and as an important film for the representation of the LGBTQ+ community in contemporary cinema.

„Check“" is not just a war drama, but a story about human resilience and the pursuit of dignity. Strong performances, an honest script, and emotional direction make the film a memorable cinematic experience that leaves a lasting impression long after the final credits roll.
