Exit 8 is a 2025 Japanese action horror adventure film directed by Genki Kawamura from a screenplay by Kotake Create, Kentaro Hirase, and Genki Kawamura. The film is set to be released in Japan on August 29, 2025.
The film is an adaptation of a video game of the same name, which gives the plot a specific gaming rhythm and structure.
The main character, named "The Lost Man" (played by Kazunari Ninomiya), finds himself trapped in an endless underground building—a subway station that seems to have no end.
The rules are simple but cruel: if he sees an "anomaly" in the corridor, he must turn back. If he doesn't see it, he must move forward. But one mistake means returning to the beginning (Exit 0). The goal is to reach exit number 8 — "Exit 8.".
As he moves through the corridors, the hero begins to feel that the world around him is changing - fluids of consciousness, hidden symbols, repetitions and time loops. Each corridor carries the feeling of a trap, and the scariest thing is that when he stops believing, he loses.
Kawamura uses a minimalist, yet purely psychological approach—the corridors, the monotony, the repetition, and the feeling that time stands still. The camera often gives a perspective „from the point of view“ of the character—the viewer seems to be walking with him, feeling his footsteps, hearing his heartbeat. The set design—white/gray walls, neon lighting, labyrinthine corridors—adds a sense of impasse.
„Exit 8“" is an intelligent, visually stunning, and uncomfortably profound film that proves that horror isn't just about jumps and screams—it can be a meditation on the psyche, space, and time. If you're drawn to psychological thrillers, mind-bending thrillers, and films that make you look around after the credits roll, this is the film for you.
