The cruel road
The cruel road is a 2025 Bulgarian documentary film directed by Deyan Bararev. The film premiered in Bulgaria on April 18, 2025.
1984. Behind the Iron Curtain, in the heart of the Eastern Bloc, Bulgaria dares to challenge the gods themselves. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the socialist revolution, the country sends its most elite mountaineers to one of the deadliest challenges on Earth - the peak of Chomolungma, known to many as Everest.
But this is not just conquering a mountain. Eighteen Bulgarians are preparing to face one of the most brutal routes in mountaineering – the West Ridge, a fearsome route known by the nickname „The Cruel Path“. This is a territory where nature reigns mercilessly, and every step could be the last.
Among them are Hristo Prodanov, Ivan Valchev, Metodi Savov, Nikolay Petkov and Kiril Doskov – five heroes determined to cross a ridge that no human foot has ever set foot on. They set out for the summit along the most difficult possible line – entirely along the West Ridge – a route that remains almost insurmountable even today.
Behind this feat, however, lie stories of extraordinary courage and unconditional comradely support, as well as tragic mistakes that led to irreversible consequences. Now, after decades of silence, the truth is revealed to us - raw, unadulterated and shocking. Thanks to previously unpublished radio recordings and memories of surviving participants, we will hear what really happened during the expedition.
The film tells the story of the first Bulgarian ascent of Mount Everest and presents the story of a group of Bulgarian climbers who face one of the greatest challenges in the world - climbing the highest peak on the planet.
The film includes archival footage and interviews with expedition participants, such as Ivan Valchev, Metodi Savov, Nikolay Petkov, Kiril Doskov, Doychin Vassilev, Kancho Dolapchiev and Ognyan Baldzhiyski. They share memories and experiences from this historic event, which remains significant in the history of Bulgarian mountaineering.
