„Tenzing“" is an upcoming biographical drama film telling the true story of Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay and his historic ascent of Mount Everest alongside New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary. Directed by Jennifer Peadham, and the script was written by Luke Davis. The film will be released in select theaters on October 9, 2026, and will be available globally on the Apple TV movie platform on October 16.
In the lead role is Jenden Phuntsok, which recreates Tenzing Norgay, while Tom Hiddleston plays Edmund Hillary, and William Defoe plays Colonel John Hunt. The cast also includes Caitriona Balfe, Tingli Lhamo and Tenzin Dalha. The story focuses not only on the conquest of the highest peak on the planet, but also on the cultural, social and personal conflicts surrounding the 1953 expedition.
Plot
The film follows Tenzing Norgay as he becomes an accomplished mountaineer, but still has to fight for his place on the British Everest expedition. Together with Edmund Hillary, he heads to the summit, turning the perilous climb into a historic moment that will change both of their lives. The story is based on true events and highlights the fact that Tenzing sees the mountain as the sacred Chomolungma, not just another challenge to conquer.
An important part of the story is the relationship between Tenzing, his wife Dawa, and the expedition secretary Jill Henderson, who helps him get the opportunity to participate as a full member of the British team. Colonel John Hunt also occupies a significant place in the story, as he leads the expedition and has to make decisions under conditions of enormous risk and tension. Thus, the climb becomes a story not only about the mountain, but also about the differences in background, class, culture and personal ambitions of the people who make the journey to the summit.
Directing
Jennifer Peadham has particularly relevant experience for such a project, as he previously directed the documentary "„Sherpa“" (2015), dedicated to the life of the Sherpas and their work around Everest. This previous experience allows her to look at the story beyond the traditional adventure narrative and place the mountain itself in the cultural and spiritual context of the people who live at its foot. "„Tenzing“" seems aimed at combining large-scale mountain scenes with a more intimate human story.
The visual approach is supported by photographs taken in Nepal and New Zealand, with the South Island of New Zealand used to recreate the Himalayan landscapes. The cinematographer is Stefan Duscio, and the music is by Rebecca Carriyard. For such a story, real mountain locations are particularly important because they must simultaneously convey the physical danger of the expedition and the sense of the sacred significance of Chomolungma.
Acting
Jenden Phuntsok is at the center of the production as Tenzing Norgay and carries the greatest dramatic weight of the story. Against him Tom Hiddleston builds the character of Edmund Hillary, with the relationship between the two gradually becoming one of the main plot lines. William Defoe plays the role of Colonel John Hunt, and Caitriona Balfe played by Jill Henderson.
Particularly interesting is the possibility that the film presents Tenzing not only as an assistant to Western climbers, but as an independent hero with vast experience, his own beliefs, and a personal connection to the mountain. The participation of Tingli Lhamo like Dava Norgay adds the family perspective to the story, while Tenzin Dalha recreates the young Tenzing. Here, the acting will be crucial for the balance between the historical scale and the human side of the story.
Conclusion
„Tenzing“" has the ambition to tell a well-known historical event from a different perspective. Rather than presenting Everest solely as a symbol of man's conquest of nature, the film focuses on Tenzing Norgay, his culture, and his spiritual connection to the mountain. This allows the story of the first successful ascent of Everest to take on a more personal and cultural dimension.
The pre-release information and the official trailer show a production that relies on an adventure scale, historical drama, and strong human relationships at the same time. After "„Sherpa“ Jennifer Peadham returns to the world of the Himalayas once again, but this time through a live-action story and a large international cast. For fans of historical and adventure movies „Tenzing“" is a title that deserves attention when it premieres in October 2026.
