Carried away by the spirits (Spirited Away; orig. title: Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi) is a 2001 Japanese animated family adventure fantasy film directed by Hayao Miyazaki written by Hayao Miyazaki and remains one of the most beloved films from the Japanese Studio Ghibli. The film premiered in Japan on July 20, 2001.

The film, which won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, is not just a children's tale, but a profound allegory about growing up, courage, and confronting the adult world.

The story follows 10-year-old Chihiro, who, along with her parents, finds herself in a mysterious world inhabited by spirits and strange creatures. When her parents are turned into pigs, she is forced to find the strength to save them by taking a job at a magical bathhouse run by the witch Yubaba. Along the way, Chihiro goes through many trials, learns valuable lessons about responsibility, and discovers her inner strength.

The animation is exquisitely crafted – every frame is rich in detail, and the spirit world is impressive with imagination and symbolism. The film combines gentle beauty and sometimes disturbing images that emphasize the contrast between childhood perception and the complex, often frightening world of adulthood. Joe Hisaishi’s music contributes to the magical atmosphere – at once ethereal, melancholic and full of hope.

„Carried away by the spirits“" is much more than a fantasy tale. In it, Miyazaki raises questions about greed, the ecological crisis and depersonalization in the modern world. Through Chihiro's journey, the viewer is confronted with the universal theme of growing up - the transition from carefree childhood to the conscious responsibility of a young person.

„Carried away by the spirits“" is not just a film, but a cultural phenomenon. It is a tale about the power of courage, about accepting change and about believing in one's own abilities. Even years after its premiere, it continues to excite new generations of viewers and is perceived as one of the pinnacles of world cinema.
