Shepherd is a 2026 Bulgarian historical film, directed by Milena Andonova from a screenplay by Milena Andonova and Nevena Andonova. The film premiered in Bulgaria on April 24, 2026.
Shepherd is a Bulgarian historical drama film about Ivan Rilski, who makes a fascinating journey to the beginning of the Bulgarian kingdom in the 9th–10th centuries, combining spiritual quests, historical paradigms and human destinies. It is a cinema that uses historical retrospection to pose fundamental questions about faith, the meaning of life and personal choice in the face of the temptations of time.
The plot follows the life of John, a cattle herder from a poor village, who is faced with fateful decisions at the end of the 9th century. In a world where Christianity is entering the lands of the newly converted Bulgarian Kingdom, John and his brother Alexius embark on different paths - one follows a secular life, the other takes the path of spirituality.
The film traces their transformation through encounters with monks, spiritual guides, and internal struggles that test their values. Gradually, the characters' personal stories intertwine with the historical process of creating a new moral and spiritual code, making their choices not only personal but also symbolic for the entire society. The plot is structured to leave the viewer reflecting on their inner "pastoral" role — whether in life, in faith, or in the community to which we belong.
Milena Andonova relies on a modest but emotionally strong directorial presence that pays homage to the historical era through attention to detail and atmosphere. The film does not rely on grandiose battles or special effects, but on a human portrait, shot with insight and honesty. The cinematography often uses wide shots of lush fields and harsh landscapes, creating a contrast between the inner world of the characters and the outer world of the time in which they live. This visual tension works in the service of the story and reinforces the emotional motives in the dramaturgy.
Deyan Zhekov – in the role of John, who gradually faces his inner path and calling.
Elena Telbis – a key supporting role that contributes to the emotional charge of the story.
Petar Dochev – a performance that highlights the conflict between worldly and spiritual behavior.
Tsvetan Alexiev – like Alexius, presents an alternative path in life, seeking a higher purpose.
Russi Chanev – with wisdom and weight that is felt in every scene he is in.
Valentin Ganev – contributes with significant presence and authority.
The actors create authentic characters whose motivations and internal conflicts carry strong dramatic weight. The performances are natural, deep, and convey a sense of time and place.
Shepherd is a film that not only recreates the historical context of the early Middle Ages, but also asks questions that remain relevant today - what it means to be human in a world of change, what is faith and what is the path we choose for ourselves. This film does not rely on dynamic action or grandiose scenes, but on internal conflicts, spiritual transformation and human choices, which gives it philosophical and emotional depth. For the viewer Shepherd is an opportunity to enter an "other" world, to hear the silence of the old fields and to come face to face with the same question that has troubled man for centuries: how to live with dignity, faith and peace with oneself and the world.
