„Rose of Nevada (2025) is an atmospheric British sci-fi mystery film directed by Mark Jenkin, a director known for his experimental and almost “hand-crafted„ style. The film combines elements of science fiction, psychological drama, and folk horror, creating a sense of something both old and timeless. Since its premiere at the 2025 Venice International Film Festival, the production has attracted attention with its unusual approach and mysterious story.
In a small coastal fishing village, something inexplicable happens – a ship that disappeared 30 years ago suddenly reappears in the harbor. Two men – Nick and Liam – board it in the hope of a better life. But after one voyage, everything changes: when they return, they realize that they have fallen into the past and have been mistaken for the original crew of the ship. From here on, the film becomes a puzzle – a story about time, identity and destiny. Reality begins to blur, and the characters are forced to face the question: can they escape the past, or are they already part of it?
Mark Jenkin uses a highly distinctive style – shooting on 16mm film, rough image texture and almost dreamlike editing. This gives the film a feeling of something „found“, as if the story has been dug up from the past itself. The direction does not provide clear answers. Instead, it relies on atmosphere, symbolism and repetition, which create a sense of a time loop. The film is more of an experience than a classic narrative – something that can be both mesmerising and confusing.
George McKay (Nick) – a strong and natural performance; he carries the emotional weight of the story.
Callum Turner (Liam) – a contrasting character, more impulsive and unstable, adding tension.
Rosalind Eleazar – adds depth and mystery to the community and the past.
Francis Magee – convincing as a captain carrying the weight of maritime tradition.
Mary Woodwine – contributes to the sense of strangeness and fate.
The actors play restrained and realistically, which contrasts with the surreal atmosphere and makes the story even more impactful.
„Rose of Nevada (2025) is not a film for everyone. It is a slow, mysterious and often ambiguous story that requires patience and attention. But for viewers who appreciate atmosphere, symbolism and unconventional storytelling, the film offers something rare – a sense of cinema as a dream, in which logic gives way to emotion and intuition. It is a story about time – not as a line, but as a circle from which there may be no way out.
