Our Times (2025)
Our Times (orig. title: Our Times) is a 2025 Mexican drama fantasy film directed by Chava Cartas from a screenplay by Juan Carlos Garzón and Ángelica Gudinho. The film premiered on the Netflix movie platform on June 11, 2025.
„Our Times“" is a Mexican science fiction drama film that combines a classic concept of time travel with modern social themes. Directed by Chava Cartas, the film does not aim for spectacle, but for an emotional and ideological clash between two eras - the 1960s and the present. This is a story not so much about time as a scientific phenomenon, but about changing values and the role of man in society.
The action begins in 1966, where two scientists – Nora and Hector – are working on an experiment related to time travel. After an unexpected breakthrough, they find themselves not minutes ahead, as they had planned, but decades in the future – in 2025. Found in an unknown world, the two are faced not only with technological advances, but also with profound social changes. While Nora gradually finds her place in the new reality and begins to develop in ways that were previously inaccessible to her, Hector feels an increasing sense of alienation.
The film follows their adaptation to modern times, their encounters with new people, and the challenges that challenge both their scientific ambitions and their personal relationship. The story unfolds as an intimate drama in which time is a catalyst for internal conflicts and a rethinking of life.
Chava Cartas chooses a relatively simple, almost television-like style of storytelling. The emphasis is on dialogues and ideas, rather than visual effects. This decision works in favor of the dramatic line, but sometimes limits the sense of scale that the theme suggests. The direction clearly emphasizes the contrast between the two eras – not through spectacular scenes, but through details in the behavior, language and relationships between the characters. The strongest moments come precisely from these quiet clashes between past and present.
Lucero (Nora) carries the brunt of the film. Her character is intelligent, ambitious, and gradually reveals an inner strength that has been suppressed in the past. Her performance is convincing, especially in the scenes where the heroine begins to realize her own worth.
Benny Ibarra (Hector) builds a more contradictory image – a man who finds it difficult to accept the changes around him. His performance gives a human face to the conflict between traditional thinking and new realities.
Renata Vacca (Alondra) brings fresh energy and serves as a bridge between generations, presenting a modern perspective on life, science, and freedom of choice. Ofelia Medina rounds out the cast with an authoritative presence that lends weight to the scientific and moral side of the story.
„Our Times“" is a film with an interesting concept and a clear social focus. It is not your typical science fiction, but rather a dramatic reflection on the role of time as a factor in personal development and social change. Although it does not use the full potential of its science fiction element, the film manages to provoke reflection through the characters and their choices. It is a story about love, identity and the price of progress - presented calmly, but with a clear idea.
