In open waters (Open Water) is a 2003 American adventure horror thriller film directed by Chris Kentis from a screenplay by Chris Kentis. The film was released in the United States on August 6, 2004.
The movie "„In open waters“" is inspired by a true story from 1998, when two divers were lost at sea after a tourist expedition to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. With its documentary style, minimalist approach and tense atmosphere, the production became one of the most successful independent horror films of the decade.
Susan and Daniel are a married couple who decide to treat themselves to an exotic vacation and participate in an organized diving trip among the coral reefs. However, during the underwater expedition, a fatal mistake occurs - the boat sails away, without the crew noticing that the two of them are still in the water. Left alone in the middle of the endless ocean, Susan and Daniel realize that no one knows where they are. As the hours pass, the hope of salvation gradually decreases. In addition to exhaustion, thirst and harsh natural conditions, the couple must also deal with the increasingly frequent appearance of sharks that begin to circle around them. Faced with the merciless force of nature, the two fight for their survival in one of the most terrifying possible situations.
Chris Kentis takes a very realistic approach to the story. Instead of relying on flashy visuals or excessive action, he builds tension through feelings of loneliness, helplessness, and fear of the unknown. Much of the film is shot in real marine conditions, and real sharks are used for some scenes. This adds additional authenticity and makes the experience even more intense. The director successfully turns the open ocean into a frightening character in its own right. The vast expanse of water and the lack of escape create a sense of claustrophobia despite the seemingly endless space.
Blanchard Ryan is convincing in the role of Susan. She manages to convey both the heroine's initial optimism and her gradual despair and fear.
Daniel Travis plays the role of Daniel and builds a believable image of a man trying to remain rational in a situation that seems hopeless.
Since the film focuses almost entirely on the two main characters, its success largely depends on their chemistry and acting. This is what makes the story so moving and emotional.
„In open waters“" is an example of how a highly effective thriller can be created with a limited budget. The film does not rely on spectacular scenes or complex special effects, but on realistic fear and psychological tension. More than two decades after its premiere, the production remains among the most memorable survival films and one of the best examples of how terrifying a man's encounter with ruthless nature can be.
