Madame is a 2017 French romantic comedy-drama film directed by Amanda Sturs from a screenplay by Amanda Sturs and Matthew Robbins. The film premiered in France on 22 November 2017.
„Madame“" tells the story of a wealthy American couple — Anne and Bob — who live in a luxurious mansion in Paris. To impress high-society guests, they host an elaborate dinner party. When it turns out that the table is set for thirteen people — a sign that Anne considers a bad omen — she decides to add another guest.
Thus, the role of a mysterious Spanish noblewoman is taken by the servant Maria, who has worked in their home for years. She is given a dress, pearls and a new identity - for just one evening. Maria unexpectedly charms a rich, mysterious art dealer, who falls in love with her. The comical takeover of the elite circles turns into romantic chaos, and the inverted social hierarchy makes the hosts lose control.
The chemistry between the characters is saturated with tension, comic situations, and social imbalance. Rossi de Palma is the true heart of the film — colorful, funny, sincere, and painfully human. Toni Collette creates an image of a woman overcome by control, jealousy, and a suppressed fear of losing her status. Harvey Keitel plays more restrained, but adds stability and weight to the story.
The film is French in spirit—elegant interiors, a rich color palette, sophisticated music, and a light irony of high society. The comedy is born from the clash between privilege and naivety, between people who take themselves too seriously and Maria, who is simply herself.
„Madame“" is a stylish, warm and ironic comedy that shines thanks to Rossi de Palma and the skillful play with social roles. Light, charming and enjoyable European cinema.
