It's Never Just Sex (2024)

It's never just sex. is a 2024 Bulgarian romantic comedy film directed by Sanya Borisova and written by Sanya Borisova. The film premiered in Bulgaria on May 8, 2024.

The film examines the lives of four women with different characters, destinies, and life positions, who are united by a common, invisible thread — the inability to create fulfilling family relationships.

Maya - a housewife, mother of two children, completely devoted to home and family. Vicky - a girl from the countryside who has just graduated from school and dreams of development in Sofia. Madeleine - an actress, a romantic, looking for "true love". Ira - a rich heiress, bohemian in spirit, looking for adventure and independence.

They all come together for a tarot reading, where they discover that they were karmically connected in a past life to a man, Sultan. Their connections to this symbolic figure raise questions about prejudice, intimacy, and the meaning of love.

The actors are the film's strong point — Sanya Borisova As one of the four women, she brings both tenderness and determination; her partners also contribute to the diversity of voices and destinies. The supporting characters build a comprehensive picture of social expectations, personal ambitions, and conflicts that are real and understandable.

The film uses a light, ironic tone — a comedy with sarcastic touches that is not afraid to talk about sex, intimacy, and female emancipation without unnecessary censorship. There are scenes with modern dialogue, domestic and urban settings, as well as a contrast between colorful dreams and the difficulties of real life. The musical design, costumes, and visual design emphasize the archetypal images, with each heroine having her own style.

„It's never just sex.“" is a film that provokes: it talks about intimacy and its price, about female autonomy, about karma and the choices we carry from our past. It is a comedy that is not shy about asking serious questions — and that is its strength. If you are looking for a film that will make you smile, but also think — this is a good choice.
