I Swear (2025)
I swear (literal translation: I swear.) is a 2025 British biographical drama film directed by Kirk Jones from a screenplay by Kirk Jones. The film is set to be released in the United Kingdom on 10 October 2025.
The film follows the life of a man, John Davidson, from his childhood to the 1980s, when symptoms of Tourette syndrome, until his adulthood, when he became an activist and advocate for people with this disorder.
As a student, John is unfamiliar, different - his tics, uncontrollable outbursts, emotional breakdowns isolate him; his school and family react with incomprehension and cruelty. However, over time he embarks on the difficult path of self-awareness and acceptance - with the help of people who understand him, and with the steadfastness not to apologize for what he simply cannot control.
John's journey is marked by pain, stigma, struggle, and societal prejudice—but also by hope, change, self-discovery, and the pursuit of dignity. The film doesn't gloss over the hardships, but it also shows the strength of the human spirit.
Kirk Jones manages to find a sensitive balance between the harshness of reality and the warmth of human empathy. The picture is honest, sometimes painful — it does not spare the negatives: bullying, rejection, alienation. But it does not fall into pathos — the humor, personal perspective and sincerity give air and hope.
The acting — above all, of Robert Aramayo — is perhaps his greatest achievement: he manages to convey not only the physical tics and difficulties, but also the inner vulnerability, anger, shame, and finally — dignity. The supporting roles (Maxine Peake, Shirley Henderson, Peter Mullan) add weight, humanity, and reality — they are not just a backdrop, but real people with whom the viewer can empathize with the story.
The director uses moments of silence, intimate scenes, a minimalist soundtrack, and realistic dialogues — all to bring the situation face to face, without a filter.
„I swear“" is one of those rare titles that combines strength and compassion, cruelty and understanding — and that manages to bring a true human story to the screen with respect and dignity. The film is not just a biography — it is a cry for empathy, understanding and acceptance. It shows that difference is not a sin, that neurological disorders do not cancel the human right to life, dignity and hope.
The acting, direction and sincerity of "„I swear“" make it one of the strongest and most important film titles of 2025 — not only because of the theme, but also because of the message: that humanity should not be feared, but understood.
