Insatiable Hearts (2014)

Hungry Hearts

Insatiable hearts Hungry Hearts is a 2014 Italian romantic drama thriller film directed by Saverio Costanzo and written by Saverio Costanzo, Marco Franzoso, and Daniela Merlo. The film was released in Italy on 15 January 2015.

„Insatiable hearts“" is an Italian psychological drama based on the novel "„The indigo child“" by Marco Franzoso. The film combines family drama, psychological thriller and emotional tension in a story about parenthood, obsession and the destructive side of fear. The production was presented in the competition program of the Venice Film Festival, where Adam Driver and Alba Rohrwacher won the Volpi Awards for Best Actor and Actress. The film is distinguished by a tense and claustrophobic atmosphere, gradually transforming an otherwise ordinary story about a young family into a disturbing study of mental instability and parental obsession.

The story follows Jude, an American engineer, and Mina, an Italian woman working in New York. The two meet by chance after getting locked in the bathroom of a Chinese restaurant. Despite the strange beginning, a relationship quickly develops between them. After Mina becomes pregnant, their relationship gradually begins to change. She develops a strong obsession with the idea of "purity" and begins to believe that their child must be protected from everything harmful in the world - modern medicine, contaminated food, and outside influences.

After the birth, her condition becomes increasingly alarming. Mina imposes extreme diets and refuses medical care, while the baby's health begins to seriously deteriorate. Jude gradually realizes that he must choose between loving his wife and saving his own son. The film turns the family conflict into a psychological battle in which no one is completely sure what is right and how far parental love can go.

Saverio Costanzo builds the film with a very intimate and tense style. The camera often stays close to the characters, which creates a feeling of suffocating proximity and emotional pressure. The direction gradually changes the tone of the story - from a romantic and almost awkward love story to a disturbing psychological drama. This slow build-up of tension makes the film particularly impactful. New York is shown not as a noisy and dynamic city, but as a cold and isolating space in which the characters gradually lose touch with each other. Particularly powerful is the way in which the film presents Mina's mental breakdown - without cheap sensationalism, but through small changes in her behavior, eating habits and attitude towards the world.

Adam Driver is extremely convincing as Jude, a man who gradually goes from a loving and patient partner to a desperate father trying to save his child. His performance is restrained but very emotional.
Alba Rohrwacher gives an impressive performance as Mina. She creates a character that is at once fragile, frightening, and tragic. Her character is not presented as a classic villain, but as a person consumed by her own fears and delusions.
Roberta Maxwell in the role of Jude's mother adds stability and human warmth to the otherwise tense story.
The supporting roles of Jake Webber, Natalie Gold and Victor Williams contribute to the feeling of a realistic family and social environment.

„Insatiable hearts“" is a heavy and tense psychological drama about fear, control and the dangerous border between parental care and obsession. The film's strongest point is its emotional authenticity. The story does not rely on big twists or external horror, but on the gradual disintegration of a relationship under the weight of mental instability and fear for a child. With its claustrophobic atmosphere, strong direction and exceptional acting performances, "„Insatiable hearts“" remains one of the most impactful psychological dramas of European cinema in the 2010s.
