Hope (2026)

Hope is a 2026 South Korean fantasy action thriller film directed by Na Hong-jin from a screenplay by Na Hong-jin. The film premiered in France (Cannes Film Festival) on May 17, 2026.

The movie "„Hope“" (written and directed by Na Hong-jin — the creator of "„The sob“(2016)) combines science fiction, psychological horror, and suspenseful survival in a story set in an isolated port village near the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea.

The production has attracted huge attention even before its premiere due to its impressive international cast, including Hwang Jung-min, Jo In-sung, Ho-yeon, Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander. The film is also one of the biggest South Korean releases in recent years, and its premiere at Cannes has sparked serious discussions among critics and audiences.

The story begins with a mysterious discovery near a remote port town. Soon, the residents begin to encounter unexplained phenomena and a presence that is unlike anything they've ever seen. At the center of the story is Beom Seok, a local police chief who is trying to contain the growing panic among the population. Together with other residents of the town, he gradually realizes that what is happening is connected to an extraterrestrial threat that puts the entire community in a fight for survival.

As the story progresses, it moves through a variety of genre elements, from mystery and psychological horror to high-stakes science fiction suspense. It is this ever-changing atmosphere that is one of the film's most talked-about features. The film focuses not only on the threat itself, but also on the way fear changes people's behavior when communication and order begin to break down.

Na Hong-jin directed "„Hope“" with his characteristic style — slow build-up of tension, sudden bursts of chaos and a strong sense of anxiety. Like his previous films, the story constantly makes the viewer doubt what is really happening and where the plot will take him. The direction combines harsh realism with an almost nightmarish atmosphere. The isolated coastal environment, fog, forests and the feeling of being cut off from the world enhance the feeling of helplessness. The scale of the production is particularly impressive — the film includes complex visual effects, tense action scenes and a great variety of genres. According to early reactions from festival screenings, the film constantly shifts its tone between horror, science fiction and thriller. Hong Kyung-pyo's cinematography contributes significantly to the atmosphere with wide shots of empty spaces and tense close-ups during moments of crisis.

Huang Jung-min plays the role of Beom Seok, a police chief who tries to maintain control over a situation that seems to be beyond all logic. His presence adds weight and realism to the story.
Jo In-sung plays Sung Ki, a character who gradually finds himself drawn into the center of the crisis.
Ho-yeon as Sung E adds a more emotional and human element to the story, while Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander participate in mysterious roles related to the alien presence.
Among the supporting cast, the following stand out: Taylor Russell, Cameron Britton and Um Moon-sook, which contribute to the feeling of an international and large-scale project.

„Hope“" looks like an ambitious and large-scale sci-fi horror that combines an alien threat with psychological tension and social panic. The film's strongest point will probably be its atmosphere — the sense of isolation, fear, and the gradual disintegration of reality. At the same time, the production aims for a much larger scale than the typical horror genre. With its impressive cast, unusual genre mix, and direction by Na Hong-jin, "„Hope“" has the potential to become one of the most talked about Asian titles of 2026.
