Gomorrah

Gomorrah (Gomorrah(Italian: ) is a 2008 Italian crime drama film directed by Matteo Garrone from a screenplay by Roberto Saviano, Maurizio Braucchi, Ugo Citti, Gianni Di Gregorio, Matteo Garrone and Massimo Gaudioso. The film premiered in Italy on 16 May 2008.

„Gomorrah“" is an Italian crime drama directed by Matteo Garrone, based on the book of the same name by Roberto Saviano. The film became an international phenomenon and won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes, thanks to its uncompromising realism. This is not a typical mafia film - there is no romance, no "honor among thieves", but only harsh and merciless reality.

The film does not follow a central story, but presents several parallel lines that reveal different aspects of the Camorra's activities in Naples. One line follows a young boy who dreams of rising up in the criminal world, unaware of its true cruelty. Another focuses on an accountant who distributes money to the families of imprisoned members of the organization - a routine but dangerous job.

There is also a plot about illegal dumping of toxic waste – showing how crime permeates even the industry and threatens entire communities. A separate line deals with the garment industry and its connection to the mafia, revealing how even fashion is part of the criminal network. All these stories intertwine thematically, creating a complete portrait of a system in which violence and corruption are everyday life.

Matteo Garrone's direction is extremely realistic and almost documentary. The camera is often handheld, the movements are natural, and the scenes seem to have been captured in real life. The locations – especially the neighborhoods around Naples – are not just a backdrop, but an active part of the atmosphere. Garrone avoids any stylization and dramatization. The violence is shown abruptly and without warning, which makes it all the more shocking. This approach makes the film difficult to watch, but extremely authentic.

Tony Servillo as Franco – a cold-blooded businessman involved in the illegal waste business.
Salvatore Abruzzi as Toto – a young boy who gradually enters the world of the Camorra.
Gianfelice Imparato like Don Ciro – the man who distributes the money, who finds himself in a dangerous situation.
Marco Makor and Ciro Petrone like two young men obsessed with the idea of getting rich quick and power.
Salvatore Cantalupo as Pasquale – a tailor trying to survive between business and crime.
Many of the actors are non-professionals or lesser-known, which adds to the authenticity.

„Gomorrah“" is a difficult but extremely important film. It shatters the myths about the mafia and shows it for what it is – a system built on fear, poverty and exploitation. This is not entertainment cinema, but almost a social document. A film that does not aim to entertain, but to show reality as it is. For viewers looking for depth and realism, this is a must-see title.
