Ghostbusters: Afterlife is a 2021 American fantasy comedy film directed by Jason Reitman according to the scenario of Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan. The world premiere is on November 19, 2021, when the film is also released in cinemas in Bulgaria.
After losing her home, the single mother Cali moves with her two children to the small town of Somerville, where the family inherits an old farm from the children's grandfather. As they explore the neglected estate and the surrounding area, Phoebe and her brother Trevor begin to discover strange clues related to their grandfather's past. Their curiosity gradually leads them to the history of the original ghost hunters and the equipment that has remained hidden from the world. With the help of new friends, they try to understand why unexplained phenomena are occurring in the area. It soon becomes clear that beneath the seemingly peaceful surface of the town lies a danger that could affect many more people.
Jason Reitman approaches the series with respect for the original films, moving the action to a quieter, more rural setting. Rather than constantly relying on comedic situations, the direction gradually builds mystery and a sense of looming threat. The story emphasizes family memory and the bond between generations, and familiar elements from the series are woven into the new adventure. At times, the development is slower, but this helps the film build atmosphere before moving on to larger-scale fantasy scenes.
Makena Grace stands out as Phoebe with an intelligent and restrained performance that combines curiosity, a sense of humor, and emotional vulnerability. Finn Wolfhard gives Trevor youthful energy, and Kerry Kuhn convincingly portrays a mother trying to provide a new beginning for her family. Paul Rudd brings lightness and comedic presence to the role of the teacher Gary Gruberson. The return of familiar faces from the original series adds to the sense of continuity and gives the story special value for longtime fans.
Ghostbusters: Legacy combines family drama, mystery and fantasy adventure, placing heritage and memories at the center of the narrative. Its strongest moments are related to the young characters and their gradual discovery of the past, while some plot decisions rely heavily on nostalgia. The film does not simply copy the formula of its predecessors, but tries to pass the baton to a new generation. For viewers who like fantasy films with ghosts, family relationships and references to the classics, this is a pleasant return to the familiar world of ghost hunters.
