GI Joe: Strike Back (GI Joe: Retaliation) is a 2013 American-Canadian action-adventure fantasy film directed by John M. Chu from a screenplay by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The film was released in the United States on March 28, 2013.
„GI Joe: Strike Back“" is a sequel to the action franchise based on the popular Hasbro toy line. The film takes a more raw and direct approach than its predecessor, combining military action, spectacular battle scenes, and elements of a global conspiracy.
After the events of the first film, the elite GI Joe unit finds itself in an extremely vulnerable position. A covert operation fails, and the organization is declared an enemy of the state after manipulations at the highest political level. The surviving members of the team are forced to hide and operate outside the law while trying to figure out who is behind the betrayal. Gradually, it becomes clear that the threat is much greater - it involves a global conspiracy that could change the balance of power in the world. To deal with the situation, the heroes seek help from legendary veterans and build a new alliance. The film develops the story through a combination of missions, pursuits and direct clashes, gradually revealing the scale of the conflict.
John M. Chu gives the film a more realistic and "earthy" tone, reducing the science fiction elements in favor of more traditional military action. The direction focuses on dynamics and clearly structured fight scenes. Particularly impressive are the hand-to-hand combat scenes and the use of different fighting styles, as well as the famous mountain scene, which demonstrates strong visual choreography.
Dwayne Johnson In the role of Roadblock, he is the leading figure of the film – charismatic, physically imposing, and with a clearly expressed leadership presence.
Bruce Willis as General Joe Colton adds classic action heft and a sense of continuity with the older generation of characters.
Channing Tatum appears in the role of Duke, his participation initiating the events and setting the emotional tone.
Ray Park reprises the role of Snake Ice, relying entirely on physical acting and fighting skills, creating one of the most memorable characters.
Lee Byung-hun as Storm Shadow offers a more complex image, balancing between honor, revenge, and personal history.
Among the other actors, Adrianne Palicki, D. J. Cotrona and Ray Stevenson stand out, contributing to the building of the team dynamics and the antagonistic line.
„GI Joe: Strike Back“" is a tighter and more focused action film than the first film. It doesn't aim for a complex plot, but rather for spectacular and straightforward entertainment. The film relies on a charismatic cast, well-choreographed fight scenes, and a fast pace. While it doesn't offer much depth, it fulfills its main goal - to be a dynamic and engaging action experience.
