Codename: Devil (orig. title: Diabel) is a 2024 Polish-American action film directed by Blažej Jankowiak from a screenplay by Robert Żebinski. The film premiered in Poland on November 29, 2024.
The movie "„Codename: Devil“" combines crime fiction, dark atmosphere and raw physical action in a tale of a veteran who returns home and finds himself at the center of a ruthless gang war. The production has the feel of older European crime films — dirty streets, morally confused characters and a world where violence is commonplace. Instead of a glossy Hollywood style, "„Codename: Devil“" chooses a more raw and realistic approach, filled with tension and inner gloom.
The main character, Max, is a former soldier for whom the army was his only real family for 25 years. After leaving the service, he returns to his hometown in the hope of finding at least some peace and meaning away from the battlefield. But upon arrival, he realizes that the place is no longer the same. The city is torn apart by a conflict between criminal groups, and corruption and violence have permeated everywhere. Max unwittingly finds himself involved in a struggle between local gangsters, influential figures and people ready to do anything for power and money.
The more he tries to stay away from the conflict, the deeper he gets drawn into it. His past as a soldier gradually resurfaces, and the traumas accumulated over the years begin to influence his every decision. The story moves between shootouts, pursuits, betrayals and attempts to survive, but beneath the action lies a story about a man who no longer knows how to live outside of violence. The film constantly raises the question of whether a man like Max can ever escape the world that has built him.
Blazej Jankowiak directs the film with a dark and tense style that perfectly suits the story. The camera often uses cold colors, industrial spaces and nighttime cityscapes to emphasize the sense of decay and hopelessness. The action scenes are direct and physically raw. Instead of overly stylized stunts, the film relies on more realistic fights and chaotic gunfights that look painful and dangerous. This gives the action a heavier and more real feel. The strongest point of the direction is the atmosphere. Almost every scene carries tension and a feeling that violence could break out at any moment. Jankowiak manages to show a world in which morality is blurred and survival often requires cruelty.
Eric Lubos (Max) gives a strong and physically demanding performance. His character is silent, exhausted, and scarred by years of violence, and the actor manages to convey this through presence, looks, and tense demeanor without relying on too much dialogue.
Paulina Galazhka [Kaya] brings a more human and emotional side to the story. Her character is one of Max's few connections to normal life and serves as a reminder of what he has lost.
Alexandra Poplavska [Swan] builds a character of a woman who understands the cruelty of the world around her perfectly. Her presence adds additional tension and uncertainty to the story.
Pyotr Troyan [Kantor] creates one of the more dangerous and unpredictable characters in the film. His character brings a sense of chaos and constant threat.
The film also stars Krzysztof Stroinski, Alexandra Konechna, Karol Bernacki, Piotr Myazga and Nikola Kanzia, which contribute to the dark criminal atmosphere.
„Codename: Devil“" is a harsh and dark crime action film that emphasizes not so much the spectacle as the feeling of fatigue, violence and moral decay. The film does not try to be light entertainment. It is a story about a man who has been trained all his life to survive through force and who no longer knows how to exist outside this world. Although the plot uses familiar genre elements, the atmosphere, the harsh visual style and the strong presence of Erik Lubos make "„Codename: Devil“"in a tense and sufficiently impactful crime experience.
