Carter (orig. title: Kateo) is a 2022 South Korean action-thriller film directed by Jung Byung-gil from a screenplay by Jung Byung-gil and Byeong-sik Jung. The film premiered on the Netflix movie platform on August 5, 2022.
The story revolves around Carter (Joo Won) – a man who wakes up with no memory of who he is, what happened, or why he finds himself in the middle of a biochemical crisis threatening humanity. A voice in his ear gives him instructions, and an implant in his head is connected to a dangerous mission. Due to a virus that turns people into aggressive and deadly creatures, Carter must complete a task whose consequences could lead to salvation or destruction.
The plot is not entirely original, but it is delivered with energy and unexpected twists. Its greatest merit lies not in the story, but in the way it is visually realized.
The film is shot in what appears to be a single continuous shot, a technique familiar from films like 1917 or Birdman, but taken to its extreme in Carter. The camera literally spins, falls, flies off in a drone, enters helicopters and cars, creating the feeling of a wild virtual ride. Sometimes it's impressive, other times it's tiring and even confusing. The transitions between action scenes are brutal, dynamic and often surreal.
While bold, this style has its drawbacks – sometimes the quality of the effects and editing suffers, and the visual chaos overshadows the logic of the action. Some viewers may experience fatigue from the excessive visual stimulus, while others will appreciate the avant-garde approach.
Carter is a film that will not leave the viewer indifferent. It will either impress you with its innovations or exhaust you with its chaotic form. It is not for everyone's taste, but it is an example of how cinema continues to experiment and seek new means of expression. If you are looking for traditional action with a clear structure and emotional depth - this is not the film for you. But if you want to experience 2 hours of intense visual adventure, Carter may be the right experience.
