Bet is a 2026 Bulgarian-Romanian historical drama film directed by Svetoslav Ovcharov from a screenplay by Svetoslav Ovcharov. The film premiered in Bulgaria on February 20, 2026.
„Bet“" is the new historical drama by Prof. Svetoslav Ovcharov, which emerged as one of the most discussed Bulgarian titles in early 2026. The film was initially presented and opened the 29th Sofia Film Fest in March 2025, and later - from February 20, 2026 - it also hit Bulgarian cinemas.
The work weaves together true historical events and personal dramas from the Renaissance era and the period after the Liberation of Bulgaria, while at the same time building a bridge between the past and our time.
„Bet“" takes place at the end of the 19th century, when the Principality of Bulgaria was just establishing itself as a state on the political map after the Russo-Turkish War. The political and social climate at that time was tense — the country was struggling with internal and external threats, and its unstable position made every step fateful.
At the center of the plot are two close friends — the Major and the Prime Minister — who have shared ideals, a home, and even a love for the same woman since the Khrushchev years. However, their friendship falls apart when the Major organizes a conspiracy with the intention of overthrowing the government and dethroning the Prince. The woman — the third party in this complex triangle — is faced with the dilemma of whether to save the brotherhood between the men or to stand up against her own joke. The stakes in this conflict are not just politics — they are the lives of the two men and the future of Bulgaria.
The script and direction of the film were entrusted to Prof. Svetoslav Ovcharov, who is the author of more than 30 documentary and feature films and extensively researches Bulgarian history in his works.
Ovcharov knows how to combine historical accuracy with personal drama, and in "„Bet“"he manages to build the tension so convincingly that the plot sounds contemporary, even though it takes place more than 140 years ago. It would be easy to focus only on the facts — political intrigue, conspiracy, and diplomatic moves — but Ovcharov also pays attention to the human dimensions of these events: love, betrayal, and moral choices amid turbulent changes.
In "„Bet“" features a number of the most respected names on the Bulgarian stage, who successfully embody complex characters based on real people:
Zahari Baharov — a strong presence with deep emotional dynamics;
Assen Blatechki — impressive and nuanced in dramatic moments;
Deyan Donkov — traditionally persuasive and charismatic;
Ophelia Poppii — Romanian actress with a delicate and strong contribution;
Ivan Savov, Valentin Ganev, Malin Krastev, Stefan Mavrodiev, Gergana Pletnyova — contribute to the film's rich performing palette.
The actors are able to convey both the political weight of the era and the intimate experiences of the characters, which makes "„Bet“"A story that is both epic and deeply human.".
„Bet“" is at once a historical drama, a political thriller, and a human story about the choices that shape the fate of a nation. With its visual style, strong acting, and profound narrative, the film deserves a place on the big screen and in the festival calendar.
This is a work that not only recalls significant events from the past, but also responds to contemporary questions of identity, politics, and personal responsibility.
