Being Human (2026)

Rights holder / Distributor: Apple Original Films

Being Heumann is a 2026 American biographical drama film directed by Sian Heder from a screenplay by herself and Rebecca Taussig. The film is dedicated to Judy Human, one of the most significant figures in the fight for disability rights in the United States. Its world premiere is on September 10, 2026, as the opening film of the Toronto International Film Festival, and its premiere on Apple TV is scheduled for November 13, 2026.

In 1977, young activist Judy Human and a group of like-minded people decided that they would no longer accept institutional neglect of people with disabilities. After their attempts to get a response from the authorities failed, the protesters took a bold step and occupied a federal government building in San Francisco. What began as a spontaneous act of defiance turned into a sustained action that united people from different backgrounds and personal stories. They faced the difficult task of being heard and forcing the authorities to take real action against discrimination.

Sian Heather, known as the director of CODA, places people at the center of the story who are rarely given a leading role in traditional historical dramas. Rather than presenting the movement solely through political speeches and institutional decisions, the film traces personal relationships, disagreements, and the gradual building of a common cause. The combination of dramatic moments and humor shows how a group of people without a pre-conceived plan becomes a force capable of attracting public attention. The historical basis gives additional weight to the story of dignity and the right to equal participation in society.

Ruth Madley plays the role of Judy Human and is at the center of the story of activism and personal courage. Mark Ruffalo plays Joseph Califano, an administration representative from whom the protesters expect concrete action. Dylan O'Brien, Rob Delaney, Roberta Colindres, Ray Fisher and Daniel Durant round out the cast with characters who are involved in the fight for change. The presence of performers with different experiences and perspectives supports the core idea of a community built around a shared purpose.

Being Heumann tells the story of a historic struggle whose significance goes beyond the specific event of 1977. The film draws attention to the obstacles faced by people with disabilities and the power of collective action when institutions refuse to listen. Through the story of Judy Human, the production presents activism not as the work of a single hero, but as the effort of many people willing to stand up for their rights. This is a biographical drama about the courage to demand change and the long journey from protest to public recognition.
