Backrooms (2026)

Rights holder / Distributor: A24

Backrooms is a 2026 American fantasy horror film directed by Kane Parsons from a screenplay by Kane Parsons, Roberto Patino, and Will Sudick. The film is set to be released in the United States on May 29, 2026.

Backrooms is a psychological horror film adapted from the internet phenomenon „Backrooms“ – a legend of a strange, infinite and disorienting space that exists outside of normal reality. The project is created by the popular American studio A24 and promises to bring the fear of „liminal spaces“ to the big screen in a plot that explores the border between reality and something sinister and invisible to the ordinary eye.

The plot of Backrooms begins when a psychotherapist discovers that one of her patients has inexplicably disappeared into a mysterious world outside the normal world – a space filled with monotonous corridors, yellow walls, and pulsing fluorescent lights.

In search of the missing man, she ventures into this unknown dimension, where everything seems familiar, but at the same time confusing and dangerous. The corridors stretch endlessly, time and space lose their meaning, and unknown creatures lurk in the shadows - everything that can confuse you is waiting for you.

The film combines elements of psychological horror, mystery, and science fiction motifs, exploring not only the physical danger of the strange space, but also the inner fears of the characters, faced with threatening situations that require courage, ingenuity, and resilience.

Director of Backrooms is Kane Parsons, a young filmmaker who gained a lot of popularity on the Internet with original videos and a miniseries based on the legend of Backrooms, before taking on the directorial debut in a feature film. Parsons' vision is distinguished by attention to atmosphere and a sense of oppressive uncertainty. Instead of traditional horror effects, he relies on visual emptiness, strange angles and disorienting geometry of space, which makes the film psychologically intense and constantly tense.

The screenplay was written by Roberto Patino and Will Sudik, who develop the original internet mythology into a structured and cinematically workable narrative, while retaining the sense of the unexplained and strange that makes Backrooms so appealing to fans of the genre.

The main roles in the film are played by:

Chiwetel Ejiofor – known for his heavy dramatic approach, which probably gives depth to the character of the psychotherapist facing the unimaginable.
Renate Reinsve – brings an emotional and sensitive interpretation that enhances the dramatic moments in the search for the lost patient.
Mark Duplass – an actor with a distinctive presence, whose role adds additional tension and human conflict.
Finn Bennett – brings young energy and dynamism to the plot.
Lukita Maxwell and Ivan Jogia – complement the ensemble with diverse characters that expand the mystery and unpredictability of the story.
The acting is a key element in creating tension, with each character confronting their own fears as they venture deeper into the dangerous unknown.

Backrooms is a horror film that brings the popular internet legend of "liminal spaces" to the big screen, creating a unique cinematic experience. Visually and atmospherically, it challenges the viewer to reflect on the nature of reality, the fear of infinity, and human vulnerability to the unknown.

Combining innovative direction, a strong cast, and a well-constructed mystery, Backrooms promises to be one of the most talked-about horror productions of 2026, especially for fans of psychological and paranormal horror.
