Back to the Past (2025)
Back to the Past (orig. title: Chum Chun Gei) is a 2025 Hong Kong action-adventure fantasy comedy film directed by Jack Lai and Yuen Fai Ng from a screenplay by Shin He. The film premiered in Hong Kong on 13 December 2025.
Back to the Past is a Hong Kong historical adventure film with science fiction elements that serves as a cinematic version of a cult television series from the beginning of the millennium — A Step into the Past — and brings back the original cast to reimagine beloved characters in a new, epic story. The film combines time travel, martial arts, historical context, and drama, transporting viewers from the modern day to the Qing Dynasty era with a sense of adventure and nostalgia.
The action takes place 19 years after the finale of the original television series. A Step into the Past. The protagonist Hong Siu-lung, who once used a time machine to find himself in ancient China, has retired from the struggle and lives peacefully with his family. But this „peaceful old age“ is interrupted when a modern man named Ken — justly or not — travels back in time to correct the injustices of his life and attempt to usurp the throne of emperor of the first unified empire under the Qing Dynasty. This return to the ancient world attracts the attention of the former hero and his allies, who must reunite to face a new threat that not only threatens power, but also family, peace, and history itself. The plot skillfully interweaves time travel with historical conflicts, exploring loyalty, fate, and the meaning of belonging as the characters try to preserve what they hold dear in a world that has already changed.
Directed by Yuen Fai Nghe and Jack Lai, the film uses a monumental visual perspective, with dynamic battle scenes that draw on Eastern martial arts traditions (wuxia) and modern science fiction motifs. The visual style is rich and cinematic, from the forest thickets of ancient China to the majestic palace sets of the imperial court. The camera follows the characters closely during battles and tense scenes, and the effects of time shifts add to the sense of epic and large-scale adventure. The film balances nostalgia for the original series with new plot threads that make it accessible to viewers who are not familiar with the old series but appreciate a heroic story with a historical setting and a science fiction shell.
For fans of the original series, the greatest joy is the return of iconic characters — and actors who embody them with experience, charisma, and a sense of history. Louis Koo brings back the image of Hong Siu-lung, a strong, experienced and balanced hero who carries the weight of the past and the responsibility of the present. Raymond Lam plays two key characters—both Chiu Pung and Emperor Ying Ching, which allows for a rich psychological contrast between different times and roles. Michael Mu with Ken bringing tension and ambition that begins the main conflict in the plot, and the other actors adding emotional and theatrical depth to the story.
Back to the Past is a worthy continuation of the legendary series A Step into the Past — bringing both emotional nostalgia and new adventures and large-scale conflicts. The film is action-packed, dynamic and visually impressive, and the plot skillfully combines time travel, historical clashes and human drama. Although some of its tone and meaning are tied to the original television series, Back to the Past manages to be a narrative that enjoys history and new horizons, suitable for both veterans and new viewers looking for an epic adventure with historical nuances.
