Ascension (2017)
Elevation is a 2017 Bulgarian-Macedonian drama comedy film directed by Viktor Bozhinov from a screenplay by Viktor Bozhinov, Neli Dimitrova and Milen Ruskov. The film premiered in Bulgaria on November 10, 2017.
„Elevation“" is a historical drama based on the novel of the same name by Milen Ruskov. The film managed to arouse great public interest even before its premiere because it combines the era of the Bulgarian Renaissance with a modern cinematic narrative, in which history and humor go hand in hand.
The action takes place in 1872, after the unsuccessful action of Dimitar Obshti during the Arabakonash robbery. Two ordinary people – Gicho and Asencho – embark on the path of revolution, guided by the idea of freedom and „sublime“ ideals. The plot puts them in a series of trials in which they encounter both historical figures and events, as well as their own fears, weaknesses and naivety. The story is both tragic and comical – it presents the great struggle for freedom through the eyes of small, ordinary people.
Viktor Bozhinov chooses to tell the story with a contemporary cinematic language – dynamic camera, clean images and attention to detail. The historical era is recreated with authenticity, but without heavy pathos, which makes the film accessible to young viewers. Petar Dundakov's music complements the feeling of epicness and drama.
„Elevation“" explores the question of national identity and the meaning of sacrifice in the name of freedom. The film shows that heroism does not always look majestic - it is often accompanied by fear, confusion and personal weaknesses. This is precisely where its power lies - the message that great historical deeds were accomplished by people who were not perfect, but believed in their ideals.
Alexander Alexiev and Stoyan Doychev in the roles of Gicho and Asencho they create a colorful and memorable duet that brings both drama and humorous moments. Philip Avramov, Hristo Petkov and other supporting actors contribute to the authentic atmosphere of the era. The team shows that Bulgarian cinema can tell a large-scale historical story with strong acting energy.
„Elevation“" is a historical film, an adventure drama and a satire at the same time. It is a kind of bridge between the past and the present, reminding us that the questions of freedom, faith and the meaning of sacrifice remain relevant. This is a film that educates, but also entertains, while at the same time establishing Bulgarian cinema at a high level.
