All Happy Families (2023)

All Happy Families is a 2023 American comedy film directed by Harula Rose from a screenplay by Coburn Goss and Harula Rose. The film is set to be released in the United States on September 20, 2024.

„All Happy Families“" is an independent dramedy production that examines family relationships with warmth, irony, and painful honesty. Director Harula Rose creates a film that seeks not sensationalism, but authenticity - a story about people who love each other but don't always know how to show it.

The film follows the Landry family as they reunite at their old Chicago home for renovations and a fresh start. However, this reunion becomes a catalyst for a series of pent-up tensions and unspoken truths. The story centers on Graham, a failed actor who still lives in the family home and struggles with his own stagnation. The return of his brother Will, a successful television star, further exacerbates the sense of failure and comparison. Meanwhile, the emergence of an old love and new life circumstances shake the fragile balance in the home.

The parents also go through personal crises – the mother faces difficulties related to the end of her professional career, and the father tries to maintain control over the family stability. All these lines intertwine, creating a sense of a real, „living“ world in which conflicts do not explode dramatically, but smolder beneath the surface. The film does not offer a classic plot with a clearly defined climax, but rather a series of moments – conversations, silences and small gestures, which gradually reveal the complexity of family relationships.

Harula Rose chooses a naturalistic approach – without unnecessary dramatization, with a focus on detail and everyday life. The camera often remains unobtrusive, as if observing the characters from the outside, which creates a documentary feel. The pace is calm and contemplative, allowing the viewer to feel the dynamics between the characters. This may seem slow to some, but it is completely in line with the idea of the film – to show life as it is, and not as we expect it to be on screen.

Josh Radnor (Graham Landry) – carries the film with an extremely natural and restrained performance; his character is vulnerable, hesitant and deeply human.
Chandra Russell (Dana Allen) – brings warmth and emotional stability, while also causing change in the main character.
Rob Hubel (Will Landry) – convincing as the successful but internally insecure brother whose life is far from as orderly as it seems.
Becky Ann Baker (Sue Landry) – one of the strongest presences in the film; her role is filled with nuance and authentic emotion.
John Ashton (Roy Landry) – portrays a patriarch who tries to keep his family together, despite his own weaknesses.
The supporting actors like Colin Kemp, David Pasquezi and Rodney Crowell complement the feeling of a real, multi-layered family.

„All Happy Families“" is a quiet, human film that does not rely on big twists, but on emotional authenticity. It is a story about the little things - the unspoken words, the missed opportunities and the difficult art of being part of a family. The film may not impress viewers looking for dynamics and dramatic twists, but for those who appreciate realistic stories and strong acting, it offers a sincere and memorable experience.
