Like the knights (A Knight's Tale) is a 2001 American comedy-adventure action film directed by Brian Helgeland from a screenplay by Brian Helgeland. The film was released in the United States on March 8, 2001.
The film is an adventure comedy with a romantic and sporty spirit, combining a medieval atmosphere with modern rhythm and music. The film, inspired by the chivalric culture and the novels of Geoffrey Chaucer, offers an unconventional story of self-promotion, love and loyalty to oneself.
The beginning of the legend
The story begins in medieval Europe, where young William Thatcher (Heath Ledger), the son of a poor roofer, serves as squire to a knight named Sir Ector. When the knight dies suddenly during a tournament, William makes a fateful decision - he puts on his armor and competes in his place. Surprisingly for everyone, he wins. Thus begins his journey towards his dream: to become a true knight.
False nobility and true valor
William assumes the false identity of "Sir Ulrich von Liechtenstein" of Gelderland and begins to participate in jousting tournaments throughout France and England. To fit in with the society of the nobility, he attracts a team of loyal friends - Roland and Watt, as well as the writer Geoffrey Chaucer, whom they save from an ignominious naked exile. Chaucer, a master of words, forges false documents of noble birth and serves as William's herald, enchanting the crowds with flowery speeches.
Over time, "Sir Ulrich" rises as a star of tournaments, but also attracts the attention of the treacherous Count Adhemar - an arrogant, ruthless, and true nobleman who cannot stand the thought that someone from the common people could overshadow him.
Love and choice
William falls in love with Lady Jocelyn, a beautiful and free-spirited lady who turns out to be no less determined and insightful than he is. Their love affair is tested as Jocelyn also hesitates - should she bet her heart on a man who hides his true identity?
William, torn between honor and lies, begins to feel how hard it is to live under a false name. And when the truth finally comes out, he is arrested and thrown into a shameful cage. Count Adhemar rejoices - he thinks he has put an end to the rise of the "false knight".
The triumph of the true knight
At a crucial moment, Prince Edward himself, who had previously watched William's courage with respect, steps in. Revealing his identity, the prince declares William a true knight and grants him the right to compete. This is the moment when nobility is not measured by blood, but by heart and valor.
In the final tournament, William faces Count Adhemar. Unarmored and with a wounded body, he withstands the clash and wins, proving to everyone that he can rewrite his destiny.
Modern spirit in medieval armor
The film uses contemporary rock music (Queen, David Bowie, AC/DC) to contrast with the historical era, but adds energy and light humor. This creates a unique atmosphere - a mix of old-fashioned romance and pop culture banter. Brian Helgeland's direction combines dynamics, humor and heart in a particularly exciting way.
The final message
„"A Knight's Tale" is a story about self-belief, friendship and true nobility. William doesn't just defeat his enemies – he defeats the notion that a person cannot transcend their roots. It is no coincidence that the film carries the message that a person writes their own legend – with will, honor and love.
