2001: A Space Odyssey or A space odyssey (2001: A Space Odyssey) is a 1968 Anglo-American fantasy film directed by Stanley Kubrick according to the scenario of Arthur Clarke and Stanley Kubrick. The film premiered on April 6, 1968.
The film is a story about evolution. Somewhere in the distant future, someone or something triggers evolution, placing a monolith on Earth (and possibly elsewhere in the universe as well).
Evolution allowed humanity to reach the lunar surface, where another monolith was found, signaling to those who placed them that humanity had evolved that far.
Now a race begins between computers and humans to catch up with the monolith builders. The winner will realize the next step in evolution, whatever that may be.
