Number 1 (2011)

Number 1 is a 2011 Bulgarian drama film, directed by Atanas Hristoskov from a screenplay by Atanas Hristoskov and Yavor Mihaylov. The film premiered in Bulgaria in October 2011 (the Bulgarian Film Festival "„Golden rose„").

The drama takes place in Sofia, in a building shared by two schools — one elite and one state. There is constant tension and hostility between the students of the two schools, which is socially conditioned. The literature teacher, Stefan, tries to show the children that fighting and violence are not the solution, but this proves to be a challenge when conflicts escalate and reach real violence.

The film resonated strongly with young audiences, especially because it tackled themes such as inequality, school violence, and social differences—topics that many people find relatable and relevant. Audiences praised the acting, especially that of Philip Avramov in the role of a teacher whose motivation and human approach create hope in an otherwise tense and gloomy environment.

Critics praised "„Number 1“" as a debut film with a clear social message and praised the director for the courage to show school reality without any disguises. Some critics noted that the film is less strong in its dramatic structure, with some scenes feeling too direct or instructive, but overall — considered an important contribution to Bulgarian cinema.
