„The Daughters of the Dance Floor“ (The Lure; original title Dancing girls) is a Polish musical horror film with elements of fantasy and black comedy, which has become one of the most original European productions of the decade. The film was directed by Agnieszka Smoczynska, for whom this is a feature-length directorial debut, and the screenplay was written by Robert Bolesto. The world premiere took place on December 13, 2015 at the Sundance Film Festival, and the film was released in cinemas in Poland that same year. Subsequently, "„The Daughters of the Dance Floor“" is gradually gaining international recognition and becoming a true cult title among fans of unconventional genre cinema.
The story takes us to Warsaw in the 1980s, where two mermaids – Silver and Golden – emerge from the waters of the Vistula River and find themselves in the noisy world of nightclubs. Thanks to their extraordinary voices, they quickly become a sensation in a local cabaret ensemble. While one gradually begins to dream of human life and true love, the other remains true to her predatory nature and the instincts that connect her to the sea. Thus, the fairy tale about mermaids gradually turns into a dark story about growing up, the desire to belong somewhere and the painful clash between love and one's own identity. The film skillfully avoids the traditional fairy tale approach and offers an unusual interpretation of the well-known myth.
In the roles of the two mermaids Martha Mazurek and Michalina Olshanska They put on impressive performances that combine musical talent, dramatic acting, and physical presence. Kinga Preis and Andrzej Konopka contribute with strong supporting roles, and Jakub Gerszal, Zygmunt Maljanovich, Marcin Kowalczyk and Katarzyna Herman build the colorful world of the nightclub, in which fantasy and reality gradually begin to intertwine.
The film's greatest virtue is its courage in mixing genres that at first glance seem incompatible. Agnieszka Smoczynska combines horror, musical, romantic drama and fairy-tale fantasy into an unusual cinematic experience. The colorful neon vision, musical performances inspired by the Polish pop scene of the 80s, and grotesque horror elements create an atmosphere that can hardly be compared to any other film. Behind all this, however, lies a story about growing up, sexuality, freedom and the desire to be accepted as one is.
After its premiere, "„The Daughters of the Dance Floor“" received rave reviews from critics and won numerous international awards, including the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in the World Cinema – Dramatic section. Gradually, the film built its reputation as a modern genre classic and is often cited as one of the most daring European productions of recent years. Agnieszka Smoczynska's original direction, the unconventional script and the impressive visual style were particularly highly praised.
„The Daughters of the Dance Floor“" is not a film for every viewer. It is a bold, surreal and highly impactful story that combines fairy tale, horror and music in a way rarely seen in contemporary cinema. It is with its originality, emotional depth and uncompromising authorial vision that the film has established itself as one of the most memorable European titles of the 21st century.
