Implemented in class 2 (22 Jump Street) is a 2014 American crime comedy action film directed by Film Lord and Christopher Miller from a screenplay by Michael Bacall, Oren Yuziel, and Rodney Rothman. The film was released in the United States on June 13, 2014.
After the unexpected success of the first film Implemented in class from 2012, the sequel "„Implemented in class 2“" takes an even more self-deprecating route, turning the very idea of Hollywood sequels into a major source of humor. Rather than trying to hide the fact that it's repeating the original's formula, the film constantly pokes fun at it, thus managing to be both a parody and an excellent sequel.
After successfully completing their mission at the high school, undercover cops Schmidt and Jenko are sent on another special operation. This time, the task takes them to a college, where they must uncover a network distributing a new dangerous drug linked to the death of a student. At first glance, the mission seems almost identical to the previous one, but the new environment presents the two friends with different challenges. Jenko quickly fits into student life and makes new friends, while Schmidt begins a romantic relationship that complicates the relationship between the two partners. Gradually, the investigation takes a back seat, and the friendship between the characters takes center stage. While trying to uncover the criminals, Schmidt and Jenko must also deal with the question of whether they can continue to be so close when life takes them in different directions.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller demonstrate even greater confidence behind the camera. Instead of avoiding comparisons to the first film, they make them a central theme of the script. Almost every scene contains a joke about how similar the sequel is to the original and how absurd it is for Hollywood to invest huge amounts of money in „the same, but bigger.“ The directors manage to combine this self-irony with impressive action scenes, dynamic editing and excellent pacing. The film never loses its energy and maintains a high level of entertainment from beginning to end.
Jonah Hill is once again brilliant as Schmidt. His sense of comedy and his ability to balance between ridiculousness and sincerity make the character extremely likeable.
Channing Tatum is arguably even funnier than the first film. Its Jenko gets more opportunities to showcase his comedic talents, and some of his scenes are among the most memorable moments in the entire series.
Ice Cube again steals every scene he appears in. The storyline involving his daughter remains particularly famous, leading to some of the funniest moments in the film.
Among the supporting cast, the following stand out: Amber Stevens West, Gillian Bell, Wyatt Russell, Peter Stormare, Nick Offerman, Craig Robinson and Dave Franco.
„Implemented in class 2“" is a rare example of a sequel that manages not only to reach the level of the original, but according to many viewers, even surpass it. The film uses a familiar formula, but develops it in a smart and funny way enough to remain fresh and unpredictable. Thanks to the magnificent chemistry between Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, the impeccable comedic rhythm and the constant self-irony, the production ranks among the best comedy sequels of the last decades. Few films manage to mock their own existence so successfully and at the same time be so genuinely funny.
