Apocalypse Now (Apocalypse Now) is a 1979 American war film directed by Francis Ford Coppola screenplay by John Milius and Francis Ford Coppola, based on the novel "„Heart of Darkness“" by Joseph Conrad. The film premiered on August 15, 1979.
A high point of the Vietnam War was when U.S. Army Captain Benjamin Willard (Martin Sheen) was sent by Colonel Lucas (Harrison Ford) on a general's order on a mission that officially "does not exist, nor will it ever exist." The mission: To track down a mysterious Green Beret Colonel, Walter Kurtz (Marlon Brando), whose army crossed the Cambodian border and carried out a strike mission against the Viet Cong.
The military considers Kurtz a complete nutcase, and Willard's job is to eliminate him. Willard discovers that his target is one of the most decorated officers in the U.S. Army. His team meets with "surfer" Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore (Robert Duvall), the leader of an American helicopter group that eliminated a Viet Cong outpost to secure an entry point to the Nung River. After several gruesome encounters in which members of his team were killed, Willard, Lance (Sam Bottoms) and Chef (Frederick Forest) rise to Colonel Kurtz's position. But once they become Kurtz's prisoners, will Willard and the others succeed in their mission?
