Extraction (2020) is an American action thriller film directed by Sam Hargrave according to the scenario of Joe Russo, based on the graphic novel City on Andy Parks, Joe Russo и Anthony Russo. The film premiered on the online movie platform Netflix on April 24, 2020.

Tyler Rake is a mercenary who accepts a dangerous assignment in Bangladesh – to rescue the kidnapped son of an influential crime boss. The boy has fallen into the hands of people whose interests are intertwined with those of corrupt officials and armed criminal groups. At first, the mission seems like just another job for a man accustomed to surviving in the harshest conditions, but circumstances quickly spiral out of control. After the operation fails, Rake must find a way to protect the boy and guide him through a city where almost every corner hides a new danger. A bond gradually develops between the two that changes the mercenary’s attitude towards the task and his own past. As the opponents tighten the noose, the hero is forced to make decisions where there is no guarantee of a happy outcome.

Sam Hargrave, whose experience as a stuntman and fight coordinator is essential to the film's style, puts the action at the center of the narrative. The camera often follows the characters closely, and the long fight scenes create a sense of immediacy and physical exhaustion. Particularly impressive is the long, seemingly continuous action sequence that traverses different spaces and combines chases, hand-to-hand combat, and shooting. The direction does not aim for a complex criminal intrigue, but for a constantly increasing tension. The urban environment is presented as a chaotic and hostile space, and the editing maintains a high pace without completely erasing the brief moments of emotional lull. The script uses familiar techniques from the genre, but the precise choreography and convincing sense of physical danger make Extraction into a more intense experience than the usual chase.

Chris Hemsworth builds Tyler Rake's character as a silent and ruthless professional, whose coolness hides pain and guilt. Here, he leaves aside the superhero charisma known from his role as Thor and relies more on physical presence, looks and restrained reactions. This gives the character the necessary weight, although the script does not delve too deeply into his psychological contradictions.Rudraksh Jaiswal is an important counterbalance to the harsh protagonist, presenting the boy not simply as a helpless hostage, but as a character with his own fear, character, and will to survive. Randeep Hooda brings additional tension with his role as a man whose actions are not always easy to read. Goal shift Farakhan и David Harbour round out the cast, although the film doesn't devote enough time to all the supporting characters to fully develop them.

Extraction relies primarily on dynamics, well-organized fight scenes and the feeling that the hero is constantly one step away from defeat. Its greatest merit is the way in which the action becomes a test of endurance, and not just a series of spectacular shots. The emotional line gives a human dimension to the story, although at times it remains in the shadow of the action. The weaknesses are mostly related to the familiar genre decisions, the limited development of some of the characters and a plot that rarely surprises. Nevertheless, the film is a convincing choice for fans of harsh action thrillers, tense chases and realistic-looking hand-to-hand combat. Extraction sets a good foundation for the series and shows how strong action staging can make up for a relatively predictable story.
