A Bigger Splash is a 2015 Italian-French musical thriller film directed by Luca Guadagnino from a screenplay by David Kajganich, Jacques Derre and Alain Page. The film premiered in Italy (Venice Film Festival) on 6 September 2015.
The film combines drama, eroticism and suspense in a romantic story set on the island of Pantelleria in the Mediterranean Sea. The film is a remake based on the classic The pool (The Swimming Pool, 1969), but brings a modern energy that turns intimate relationships into a scene of emotional storms, jealousy, and uncontrollable passion.
The story follows a famous rock singer, Marian (Tilda Swinton) and her young boyfriend Paul, who seek peace and restoration on the idyllic island. The sudden appearance of Marian's charismatic but chaotic ex-lover, Harry (Ralph Fiennes) – brings unexpected tension. With him comes his daughter Penelope, a mysterious and provocative young woman, whose presence further shakes the balance between the characters. Gradually, the innocent summer stay turns into an explosive combination of temptations, unspoken feelings and painful truths…
Guadagnino's direction is both sensual and merciless - the camera lingers on the actors' faces and bodies, capturing microscopic nuances of tension. The contrast between the hot Mediterranean sun and the dark emotional shadows creates an atmosphere in which the viewer feels like an invisible witness to an intimate drama. The film skillfully explores themes of temptation, the power of love and the limits of trust.
The music and visual style enhance the sense of luxury and decadence, simultaneously captivating and disturbing. The acting is impressive – each role is multi-layered, played with a combination of intensity and vulnerability that leaves a lasting mark.
