Kill (2023)

Rights holder / Distributor: Dharma Productions / Sikhya Entertainment / Lionsgate

Kill is a 2023 Indian action thriller film directed by Nikhil Nagesh Bhatt from a screenplay by Nikhil Nagesh Bhatt and Ayesha Syed. It is set to be released in the United States on July 4, 2024.

Plot

Amrit Rathod is a commando who learns that his beloved Tulika is being put on a train to New Delhi, where her family intends to marry her off. Along with his friend and colleague Viresh, he boards the train with the intention of rescuing her. However, their plan changes when the train is attacked by an armed gang led by Fani.

This pits Amrit against a prolonged battle in the confined space of the train as the attackers terrorize the passengers. The investigation of what is happening gives way to survival and his attempt to protect those around him. Thus, the story turns a simple train journey into a series of clashes in which the hero's fighting skills are put to the test.

Directing

Nikhil Nagesh Bhatt builds Kill almost entirely around the space of the train, which limits the characters' movements while allowing the action scenes to take place in different places in the composition. Choreography is an important part of the director's approach, with hand-to-hand combat occupying a large part of the action. The production also uses a significant amount of bloody violence, which has been reported by the British and Irish classification authorities.

The director avoids the reliance on large sets and large-scale gunfights that many action films have, concentrating the tension in the tight spaces of the train. This gives the collisions a physical feel and allows the camera to follow the characters' movements closely. Bhatt has previously worked in the genre with Apurva, and Kill further cements his interest in stories in which survival is linked to physical endurance.

Acting

Lakshya plays the lead role of Amrit, and much of his presence in the film is related to the physical side of the character. His character goes through numerous fight scenes that require considerable choreography and physical training. This is also his first major role in a feature film, and his performance puts the character at the center of the almost non-stop action.

Raghav Juyal plays Fanny, the leader of the gang that takes over the train, and Tanya Maniktala is Tulika. Abhishek Chauhan plays the role of Viresh, while Ashish Vidyarthi is Benny, Fanny's father. The main cast is supported by a large number of actors in the roles of attackers and passengers, which allows the story to maintain a constant dynamic in the limited environment.

Conclusion

Kill is an action film that sets almost all of its action on a train and uses that environment as the basis for a series of successive physical confrontations. The story is relatively straightforward, with the main emphasis on the fight scenes, movement, and tension between Amrit and the attackers. This approach makes the film closer to an intense action thriller than a traditional crime story.

The production received international distribution after Lionsgate acquired the rights for North America and the UK, and an English-language remake was later announced with the participation of 87Eleven Entertainment, the company behind John Wick. In the original version, however, the combination of Indian action tradition, martial arts, and extremely limited space for action remains the leading one. Kill is a suitable choice for viewers looking for films with prolonged hand-to-hand combat and minimal deviation from the main action line.
