Moulin Rouge!

Rights holder / Distributor: Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation / 20th Century Fox

Moulin Rouge Moulin Rouge! is a 2001 Australian-American romantic musical drama film directed by Baz Luhrmann from a screenplay by himself and Craig Pearce. It premiered in the United States on May 18, 2001. The film transports viewers to bohemian Paris at the end of the 19th century, where love, art, and the pursuit of freedom clash with the power of money.

A young English writer, Christian, arrives in Paris with the dream of creating stories about love and freedom. He soon finds himself in the world of the famous cabaret "Moulin Rouge" and falls in love with Satine - its biggest star, who dreams of becoming an actress. However, their love is threatened by a wealthy duke, ready to finance a new performance in exchange for the promise of getting Satine for himself. While a performance is being prepared behind the scenes, the characters must deal with secrets, jealousy and choices that put their feelings to the test.

Baz Luhrmann builds Moulin Rouge as a lavish visual spectacle, in which the colors, the rapid editing and the music create a sense of continuous movement. The director combines the atmosphere of a historical drama with modern musical performances, using famous songs in new arrangements. This unusual approach transforms Paris into a bright and almost fantastic world, in which the brilliance of the stage masks the personal anxieties of the characters. The film is also distinguished by its large-scale sets and costumes, which earned it two Oscars.

Nicole Kidman builds Satin's image as a combination of stage brilliance, ambition and vulnerability. Ewan McGregor gives Christian sincerity and romantic immediacy, and the musical performances of the two are an important part of the emotional impact of the story. Jim Broadbent is remembered as the cabaret owner Harold Zidler, while Richard Roxburgh presents the Duke as a threatening rival. John Leguizamo completes the cast with the role of the artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

Moulin Rouge is a story of love and sacrifice, told through music, theatricality and impressive visual energy. The film does not follow the traditional style of historical dramas, but creates its own world in which romance and tragedy go hand in hand. With strong performances from the main actors, memorable musical moments and its lush visuals, the production remains among the distinctive romantic films of the early 21st century.
